My current D18 has a 1 1/4" intermediate shaft, and was rebuilt not too long ago including a hardened intermediate shaft. It now has a cracked case and several of its gears are missing teeth. I also have another good D18 (1 1/8" intermediate shaft) and D18 seal kit. I want to use the 1 1/8" case and gears with the hard rebuild parts out of the old D18 and the new seal kit.

Is what I want to do as simple as getting the intermediate shaft hole in the new case opened up to match the old one? If I remember right, the hole in the gears should all be the same since they used different intermediate bearing designs to take up the difference in shaft size. Right? And as long as I use all the gears out of one case I should end up with a matching set as far as tooth count goes, right? Anything I'm missing? Is the intermediate shaft hole in the case tapered at all or just straight?

Figured I would make sure I'm not going to run into any obstacles before tearing everything down. Thanks for your help.

Does the 1.125" case have a big input gear hole?

    Not tapered, IIRC.

You can also use a Dana 20 case - the 20s are cheap and widely available. It will have the big hole and a 1.25" intermediate shaft.

No, both cases have the small input hole. I wish I could run a D20 but my sm465-d18 adapter is set up for the small hole.

get a T86 rear bearing retainer, and then adapt your large hole D20 to small hole.
Herm sells them as well as AA or any other 4x4 shop.
