So I have a 1971 cj5 and am looking to put a heater in it. When I bought the jeep it did not come with ANY of the hardware for the heater (knobs, heater motor, ducts, core). I've also looked at the Mohave aftermarket heaters but I don't want to spend $150 right now on heat. I've heard you can install a heater from a bronco... Can I take everything I need at the junkyard? Can I basically just pull it off an old bronco (what year) And put it all in my cj ...?? I just want something that I'm not going to break the bank with yet will put out some heat. I would like to install it in the passenger side since there seems to be more room there ... Any thoughts? If I can do this, what year bronco would I need... Thanks ...

Since you are in Boston, I would consider the highest output you can get.

yeah, definatly.... I did some more research and found out that the 1971 - 1976 (ish) CJ5's had the blower motor on the inside of the passenger dash ... If I went with a mid 1970's chevy/GM pickup/Blazer/jimmy can I fit it on the outside firewall or would that take some fabrication?? I mean all I need to do is mount the blower motor and drill two holes for the hoses right? I basically have no heat setup and want to just go to the junkyard and pickup a setup and put it in ... I've just noticed that all the "CJ 5 upgrades" have been for 1976 cj5 and later vehicles ... Thanks ...

The '71 heater is different from the '72-75 heater, to the best of my knowledge. I expect it fits in the space on the driver's side of the fire wall, as in earlier years.

If you really want to go cheap, I'd suggest you go to some u-pull-it yards and look for a heater you can adapt to the Jeep. There are a couple of big yards near Billerica that will let you wander through and look at the cars. I know I've been to Jack's, and maybe to this other one (been a while)

    Jacks Used Cars & Parts
    North Billerica, Massachusetts
    978-452-1990

    Holland Used Auto Parts, Inc.
    North Billerica, Massachusetts
    978-667-9235

There are usually a few wrecked Wranglers in these yards, and that might be a better source for a heater than a Bronco. Go, snoop around, and be creative.

Also, if you identify what you need, and the yard wants a lot of money for it (ie Wrangler heater, whatever), check Craig's List for someone that's parting ut the kind of car you need. Parts are typically much less expensive from a private party.

    hth!

Just my opinion, but I'd just pony up for one of these.

Yes, I have one, along with the stock unit. If I was starting with nothing, I'd do it again. It's relatively cheap, easy to mount, and you don't have to worry about adapting a used heater core that might leak and blower motor that might note work to begin with.
    Just my opinion...

yeah, I go back and forth whether or not I want a summit racing heater or just go to the junk yard .... I would think I could just go to the junkyard and pick around until I found something that I liked and could match it up ... I do have a hole where it looked like the heater used to be on the driver's side ... So again, I guess I can just go to the junkyard and find something that would work and instal it?

X2. I switched out the original for this one and plumbed two vents and the defroster. We've had single digit days this year and the window stays clear and the cab stays warm, never happened before.:v6:

I can't wait to see how that summit heater works when I get one in my jeep. My stock heater had a leaking heater core and none of the controls hooked up, and it would be in the way of hanging pedals.
