What sizes of modern, non military street tires will fit on stock steel?
    ( currently has 700 x 16 )
Next question after alot of sanding and priming I am almost ready to spray. I want to go with a low gloss red with black steel, black windshield frame and black lettering/stencil. I have been told that red will make all the imperfections stand out and that I should go with a light grey or white. Since I can not afford to make this project pristine anyway should I go with the color scheme I want or do diffrent colors in the hopes of hiding a few character marks???? What do you think?

Jeeps this old weren't perfect from the assembly line. Paint it, drive it and enjoy it. Anyone that gives you a hard time about paint work isn't a true JEEPER anyways.
    X3 on tires.

Paint it red. If you are using an enamel it wont be super wet gloss anyway. Once you have everything one color the spot welds, dings dents will add character.

Painting ? : IMHO- paint it to suit your use and environment. Aesthetic perfection only works if you intend to keep it in the garage. if you intend to use it on the rock or otherwise, I'd paint it where it can readily be touched up easily ie; matte black out of a rattle can!! heck, the army used to brush paint on the field (I think its the 10/10 rule; looks good from 10 ft @ 10 MPH).

Tires ? : I got 235/85 -16 on my M170. this is prob max for a safe seating on the stock narrow wheels and turning w/ fender bump is not an issue on black tops with the occasional crater or speed bump.
offroad : your articulation clearance is affected on the rocks. larger tires will require some changes in your stock springs and/or bodymount configuration among other aspects ..... thats for sure.

I have to agree with the above comments. in short: nothing wrong with a pretty jeep that likes it rough. whatever helps satisfy one's own sense of vanity R)

Nuttin wrong with Red... I use tractor paint on mine :)

10/10 or 15/15 paint job - looks good at 10' going 10 mph - that's what jeeps are for.

Paint?, what is paint, battle scars are what JEEPS are all about, It is so nice to have a stunning paint job until you roll by a low hanging bush or tree and you hear the branches ripping into and under the prime coat...
Just make it the way you want, something to be proud of no matter what you got.
    Cheers

Rustoleum is 8 bucks a qt at Walmart and sprays on very easily in a warm garage. Best part is that a little touchup can be done with a rattle can of the same color.

Ya - I use the 'expensive' stuff - it's $26 a gallon and has rattle cans ($5) for touch up too. I like it better than Rustoleum as it seems to harden more. After a summer this stuff is so hard I have to use a wire wheel to scratch it most of the time.

Van Sickle is the brand I get at the Big R in case your interested.

I didn't say 'more expensive' just 'expensive' besides - ya have to add a bit of thinner to make it spray nicer. Don't ask how much, I just put a 'splash' in :)

This is one of the reasons I like my Jeep. No pressure to get it just right. I've built street trucks, Volkswagens, old motorcycles, and a couple old tractors, and my CJ is more fun than any of the others.
