I have a lead on a tranny, transfer case, and overdrive unit. I talked to the guy about it today, and he said it's from a '62 willy's, and the tranny, transfer case, and overdrive unit are all bone stock, came in the rig originally, and he says they are all one piece, and its a spicer 300 unit (tranny, transfer case, overdrive combo). I thought the spicer 300 was the dana 300 transfer case from 80 and up. The transfer case looks identical to my dana 18 from the pic I've seen. So, does this guy have some false info, or what's the deal? I yahoo searched spicer 300 and everything comes up for the dana 300 transfer case. If anyone could shine some light on this matter for me, I'd appreciate it. I was also wondering if the overdrive unit will be 26 or 29 spline, I'm assuming it's 6 spline since it's pre-'67. Thanks for help with both questions. I'm sure this is an easy answer for a few of us on this board. Thanks.

If it has a warn overdrive on it it's a dana 18. 300's have a centered rear output and where from '80 and up CJ's. It's probably a 6 spline 29 tooth overdrive. check the shaft sticking out the middle of the back of the transfer case. if it's 1 1/8" then it has a 26 tooth OD, if the shaft is 1 1/4" it's a 29 tooth OD I believe.

That sounds exactly right to me.
I've never heard of an overdrive mounted to a Dana 300, though we have seen Dana 20's with a "Studibaker", actually a Borg/Warner R-10, overdrive. I suppose it should be possible to mount one to a Dana 300.

one of the reasons the "Warn Overdrive" unit works is the rear offset output of the d18, no place to put it on a d20 or d 300. Warn d18s have a offest rear axle, d300s do not

yeah, basically everything said so far is stuff I know, so I thought the guy was wierd when he said it was a spicer 300. I told him what a spicer 300 is, and he got mad and said "no, this an old spicer 300, they are very rare". I was just checking to see if there is an "old spicer 300". I thought it was wierd he said the tranny, transfer case, and overdrive were all one unit, not separate items. I think he's losing his mind. I may need to just take time to go find him and look at it.

Maybe some of the confusion comes from the terminology. Dana and Spicer are the same company http://www.dana.com/centennial/ variously called Dana, Spicer and Dana-Spicer. I've never heard the transfer cases called "Spicer" transfer cases, instead "Dana" for the transfer cases (D18, D20, D300, etc.) and "Spicer" for the driveline parts. It's all part of Dana Corp, but they use the Spicer brand for name/brand recognition.

Yeah, I think the seller simply does not know what he's talking about.

I don't remember the 18 well enough to recall the Spicer logo, but I think the 20s and 300s have a diamond that says "DANA" in the middle of it. To me, that suggests that the seller is reading "Spicer" on the transfer case and he mistakenly thinks it's a D300, for some reason. Saying they are all one piece may only mean that the TC and overdrive are not divorced.

Here's a more complete history of Dana-Spicer http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/entry.php?rec=986 According to this, The Spicer Company became Dana in 1946... after the die (or in this case, the case) had been cast for the model 18 transfer case.

"Alea iacta est (the die has been cast)". Julius Caeser

Without actually seeing pics of the unit(s) in question I agree with you Tim, I think we can write this off to a lack of knowledge on the seller's part.
