I got a good deal on this. I made the mount and installed it over the weekend. I also studded my battery to make it easier to add cables.

Sounds like you had problems with it?? Did you get the 10??

The tires are KUMHO race tires off a PRO4 truck.

I've read in a number of places that they don't recommend attaching winches to side posts because you'll burn up the connections inside the battery.

Those are on certain ones like AGM batteries like Optima's and such. Reason is on those batteries with dual terminals there is a thin ribbon connecting the side terminals to the top terminals and can't take the load without eventually burning out. Standard side only terminal type batteries are built for this load so no real issue.

I have my winch cables mounted to the top posts on my battery, and normal positive and negative battery cables mounted to the front posts on my battery for starting because I heard similar things. I have an Exide Orbital Extreme HD. Am I safe with how I have mine set up? any concerns with my setup?

I have had the jeep out twice and used the winch twice. The first time was an easy winch down a bank. the second time was a HARD pull from the top of a slope. My buddy broke a front ball joint halfway up and there was NO way to go back. We removed his front wheel so we wouldnt do any more damage to the front axle due to the leverage of the wheel. So I tried to pull him up and got him to the top and the chassis high centered and it started to pull me to him. We put another jeep behind me and strapped us together. After that I was able to get him over the top. Considering I pretty much drug the belly over the top of a steep edge I was happy with the winch.
When i got home I decided to unspool the 15ft of cable that I had used and respool it neatly. I pulled out about 15ft and the cable UNRAVELLED from the spool like a pullstarter spring!!! So I thought WTF is going on here. I took the whole cable off and noticed the screw that holds the cable to the spool was sheered off. So I called smittybuilt and they shipped me a new spool and screw for my winch without any hastle. I decided to remove the broken screw and put it back together.
I will have spare parts now. I think the cable wasnt spooled up very tight and when I started to winch hard It tightened up on the edge and pulled the cable into the edge where it was bolted and sheered it off that way.
If it happens again i will drill and tap a new hole in the hub of the spool instead of bolting it to the FLANGE like they do.
Deffinately worth the $380 I paid.
Heres a pic of the hill....

I was leary of a $380 winch! But $$ is hard to come by so I felt a less expensive winch was better than NO winch.....
    So far So Good.........

That winch will due just fine. I run a lot of trail here in Washington, lots of different kinds of Jeeps and Jeepers. Some with tons of money and some good down to earth working guys that have to watch their Nickles. That winch is on a lot of jeeps and I have seen it used extremely hard without failure. I am not slamming but I have had to work on more Warns than anything.
There are guys I know and run with that do not have winches! they due have big stereos and heated custom foofoo seats and such but no winches. and when I ask them about a winch! when we are pulling them out of a hole with one of these less expensive Smittys or Mile Markers they Say! "I can't afford to pay 1200 for a Warn so I don't have one"
I would rather run with a guy who has a cheep winch than no winch at all!

Looks great! When it comes to winches, when you need 'em...you REALLY need 'em!

The only problem I see in the way you hooked up the power cables. I had my Warn 8274 hooked up to a side post battery and on a long hard pull, the positive terminal melted from the high amp draw.So keep an eye on it during long pulls.
