Will a pinion yoke from a 96 zj work with a 75 dana 44 rear end? I'm trying to make a driveline for my CJ5 (has a 75 cj5 dana 44 now and the jeep itself is a 67). The old driveline is about an inch too short and I'm trying to put a cv driveline in from zj. I know its weird but the u-joints work but won't bolt up to the 67 pinion yoke.

I can't answer the question for sure but I would check the spline count. I can't remember if the '75 yoke is a fine spline or coarse spline. Earlier 44's used a coarse spline pinion yoke and later used a fine spline. Also, is the yoke from the front or rear? If the front then it used a collapsible spacer and will definitely not work. I'd have to do some checking but some late 44's also used a collabsible spacer in which case the yoke will not work on the earlier 44. Also, is the rear a 44? Is it the aluminum 44? If the aluminum version I don't think it will work. If it is a 35 or 8 1/4" then it won't work.

All right everything is for the rear end and is from a rear end. The old yoke from a 75 dana 44 axle is 26 spline count and I don't have the zj yoke just yet, but I could take it off my zj tommorrow and check. I think I'll try looking online first before I tear that apart as I need to drive it. And also it is an aluminium rear from the zj. Thanks

When you pull the yoke from the ZJ check the inside where the splines are. If there is a large space with no splines when looking from the diff end of the yoke then it is most likely a yoke for a collapsible spacer and may not work. The solid shim 44's have the splines all the way to the end of the yoke on the diff end of the yoke. If I was at work I'd look up the info but unfortunately I'm at home right now and don't have access.

I just looked at my ZJ Yoke and discovered it's the same as my CJ yoke. I had a new drive line made for my ZJ when I had it lifted, hence the extra drive line, and I must have put a new yoke on it for the new drive line. Logic would say I have a ZJ yoke lying in my garage unless I threw it away. This just might work, knock on wood.

I just looked on our Mitchell On Demand system and it's showing shims not a collapsible spacer (crush sleeve) to set pinion bearing preload so the yoke may work.

Well I'm pretty sure that the yoke off a ZJ will work, but honestly I didn't get a yoke from a ZJ anyways. I called a drive line shop in Missoula and asked if they had a yoke for a ZJ. They said they did so I stopped in and looked at it and found one that would work. The new yoke was $145.00 so when I got to a computer I looked online to see if I could find the same part with the part number. Of course I found a bunch of sights that had them for less, some for 45 bucks all the way up $150.00. I called a place to order one and after talking to a rep he told me I should replace the yoke off the transfer case instead of the axle as the double cardan joint must be attached to the transfer case, the other way would be pointless. The good news is I found a yoke that will work online and will order Monday morning. So to answer my question I think it would work, but good luck finding one at junk yard in Missoula as they won't sell you just the yoke. Thanks again for all the help.

I will pull one at Pull-a-Part and check. I always love to find new resources for parts.
