You can take the ignition switch out of dash and pull the lock cylinder out. There is a notch/hole near the front of the lock cylinder that you can see once you have it out. If you put a small screwdriver into that notch and push down on the spring clip and pull on the lock cylinder at the same time it should slide out. Once it is out the key code will be printed on the side of it. Getting somebody who can make a key based on the key code could be a challenge. When it happened to me I pulled the lock cylinder out and put one in from another. They are relatively cheap to buy ~ $20

If you remove the lock from the vehicle and take it to your locksmith they will make a key for 10-15 bucks around here. The service charge is what makes it expensive plus the time involved in removing the lock from the dash and console. The locking gas cap I would just break the lock by driving a flat blade screwdriver into the key slot and turning it, then buy a replacement gas cap.

Yes you could call a locksmith, but then you wouldn't learn anything new. Part of the fun of owning a CJ is working on it and learning how everything works.

a lock smith worth his salt will also be able to use a brass key, vise grips, and a hand file to remake you another key for the center console and gas cap for 5 bucks or so. We have them do it all the time when we get trucks in with locking rear hitch pins but no key

I suggested a locksmith because you are missing multiple keys. If it's only the ignition, then by all means, it's cheaper and easier to just pull the old one and replace it with a new set. Of course, if you have access to any of them so that you can remove the cylinders from the component, then take it to the locksmith to have keys made, it'll keep your costs down.

Is the center console keyed to match the ignition?

If it isn't it's probably a "utility lock". If there is a number printed on it check with your local hardware store or the RV shop. They usually sell replacement locks and will probably have one that has the same number for cheap.

X2 on just breaking the locking gas cap...

If you remove the filler neck you can open the gas cap from the "inside" without breaking it.

Thanks for the help guys! I called the lock smith and he told me it would be $450 to replace the ignition switch. Just because it was so old and he did not have a door lock to make a new key off of. so i told him to leave. I am run by my local dealership and see if they can make me one with my vin# or something.

If it's just the ignition you're worried about for now...make a trip to Advance or Auto Zone and buy a new one for about $20. Takes about an hour to replace yourself.

the following website shows the complete tear down steps for a column mount, just stop at the point that the lock cylinder is removed.

If it's dash mount, just unscrew the back...it's even easier.
