    doing my rebuild on my '62 Willys cj5 and found that I had 11" brakes:). But I am getting ready to replace all the old parts and noticed something looks different than the blowup view and the pics another member recently posted in the classifieds. It appears my brakes do not have the self adjusting cable kit on them. They have the adjuster screw at the bottom held by a spring instead. Is there any reason I could not just upgrade them with the adjuster kit? It appears it would fit and work fine from pics and catalog (4WD). Can anyone identify the approx. year range these were used.
    thanks to all:beer::beer:

    I can't identify them by sight, but they may be brakes from a Utility Wagon/Truck. Those are 11x2" just like the later Bendix brakes, with manual adjustment, and bolt on. Or, they may have been converted to manual adjusters. EIS sold a kit to convert to manual adjust, that looks just like those.

    Long ago, I converted my F100 brakes to manual adjust because the backing plates were so worn that the self-adjusters would not work. If I had more money at the time, I would have converted the fronts to disks, but that's how it goes when you're living on a student's budget. The drums being ground near the oversize limit may have contributed to the problem too.

    You should be able to upgrade by simply adding the self adjuster kits. Get parts for a 72-75 cj.

    These are not the early type manual adjust 11"ers like those used on early 4WD PU and SW and FC models.

    These brakes originally had adjusters on them.
    The star adjusting wheel and the shape of the shoes is a dead give away.

    The actuating cable, the lever and related pieces are missing.

    Check your FLAPS for a '74 CJ5. All the parts should be available, I would recommend new adjusters as well as the cables and actuators. Shouldn't be very expensive.

    Yep - I suggest a spring kit, cable, lever, and adjuster for each wheel. The existing bottom spring will not work with a self-adjusting setup, and the top springs look dodgy.

    Any problems with them not having the adjusters yet?

    I am starting to think mine came off of a 70's full floating 44...is that possible. the reason I think this is because both sides had the really thick spacer plates on the backside of the brake backing plate (not just the reinforcing plate). Those spacers only seem to show up on the FF 44 diagram. During re-install I decide to eliminate them but the backing plate was contacting the axle housing. this prevented the plate from being bolted up flush without spacing them out more(like they were):mad:. Clear as mud? Anybody heard of this? is it a problem to run them with the big spacers like they were? will post pics Mon. evening

    Just means someone was there before you and left them off.

    No problem, just means you have to go and adjust them once in a while. ;)

    As for the thick spacer. Isn't that the spindle in the diagram?:?

    My 44 is a rear so no spindle just a hub. I have attatched a pic of the sapcer (much thicker and has a flat top) next to the regular retaining ring. The only place I have seen anything as thick as that is for a ff 44 rear. I coudnt get the diagrams on this post. Any info on that fat spacer would be great from anybody.
    thanks
