The linked pic is of the intake manifold of my 304, between the oil filler tube and the thermostat housing. I found a detailed diagram of this intake manifold on another site, butof course the only unidentified item on the diagram was this hole (it was left open on that manifold as well). I'm going to plug it, but I would still like to know what it's for. Thanks.

From my 81 Jeep FSM, There is a picture of whats referred to as an "engine holding fixture" essentially this is a piece of 4 inch channel iron 51 inches long thats laid across the inner fenders on two 2*2*6inch long wood blocks ( one each end )

Near the middle of this channel there is a 9/16 inch * 12 tpi J bolt that hangs down toward the engine with a nut on it.

The J or hook part of the bolt goes down and hooks through a 1/2 inch * 13 tpi welded end eye bolt thats screwed into the top of the manifold, The nut on the J bolt can then be tightened to take the weight of the engine off of the engine mounts.

That hole is for the eye bolt so the weight of the engine can be supported when necessary to remove the front engine mounts to perform service such as oil pan removal.

Hey, thanks Brian. I'm embarrassed again. I have looked through my 77 FSM for some hint of what this was, and passed right over the page with the diagram you are talking about. Never would have thunk it. Also makes sense why I have not been able to find an NPT thread plug to fit. Thanks again.

There is no reason to plug the hole

Regarding your picture, you have something there with the hose connected to it that appears to be some sort of shut-off valve. Can you explain that? My '75 CJ5 w/304 has no such part, or even a hose at that location.

    Thanks,

Upper heater hose. Never thought about why the shut off valve is there.

Typically used to shut off water to the heater during the summer. Otherwise you have some heat radiating from it even when the heater isn't turned on. If you live somewhere that it gets really hot it's nice to have.
