I just bought a new project jeep cj5. The po said it was a 1974 cj5. He bought a fiberglass body for it but thought it might be the wrong year. Does any one know how to figure out which years it suppose to fit. The trans tunnel is wider then the metal body. I think the fiberglass body is a 4wd hardware fiberglass body. The heater box does fit all that well either. The jeep needs a frame so I would like to know which years I should look for. Thanks for any info.

Post a pic and we can determine what era it is for. Need a pic of the trans tunnel from above.

The trans tunnel is distinctive in the steel bodies, but a fiberglass body may not have such distinctive floors.

Instead, I'd measure the distance between the front body mounts and compare that to the distance between the rear body mounts. In a '76-on Jeep, the frame widens from front to back. An early or intermediate frame will have parallel rails.

Other than a change in the floors, fiberglass body's are interchangeable. I have a 78 FG tub on my 73 frame, other than drilling new holes for body mounts it dropped on.

I am doing the same thing. I have an early CJ6 tub from JC Whitney that will go on a CJ8 frame. But.............

Mine will not just set. I need to build some 1" spacers to get the tub up enough to allow the shock towers room, etc. So I got some 1" box tubing and I will make three "subframe" assembles that will attach to the top of the frame, then the body will sit on the subframe.

I will make one for the right and left of the side that goes from where the tub first meets the frame back to the back of the front floor. Then another one that goes along the rear of the jeep, left to right, where the rear of the tub attaches to the frame. Then the roll cage will tie into the frame and come up to the underside of the body with square pads, around 4x4". I figure with the subframe and the cage pads on the bottom of the tub, it will be well supported.

That is how my tub was when I got it. It still had the metal attached to the bottom of the tub.

I can get picts tonight if that would help.

Make sure the tub floor is reinforced in the areas of the mounts. The tubs I've seen have plywood reinforcement where the mounts go.
