    I want to paint my 69 in military colors. Is there a reference anywhere of color schemes that were used on military jeeps of this era? I am stuck on the semi-gloss dark olive green with yellow stenciling for some reason.

    Mike - go over to

    and search on the forum on paint colors. Yellow stenciling was used by the USMC so the color you are talking about is more of a USMC color maybe (what I am restoring my M38A1 to). I think the USMC semi-gloss color is 24052.

    Here is what I want my M38A1 to look like when I'm done!

    I think I bought my paint from here: http://www.armyjeepparts.com/order_page/paint_bottom_1.htm
    but in any case, that page has a lot of info.

    You can get decals and stencils here:

    Is that paint single stage? How do you spray it?

    Gillespe paint from Army Jeep Parts (and others) is far better than Aervoe (other vendors), The Gillespe is single stage synthetic enamel, easy to spray and holds up reasonably well but not nearly as well as modern urethanes.
    The color in the above post is 1957+ 24087 semi gloss. The semi gloss looks good, weathers pretty well and still hides body problems pretty well.
    Army Jeep parts probably has the USMC flat yellow in a spray can too.

    The Gillespie paint is what I have used on my MB and on my A1. I use the late WWII lustreless so I can keep rattle cans to touch up both the same color. I have always ordered mine from RAPCO. Here is a pic for reference to the correct semi-gloss above.

    Thanx guys! Awesome ideas and sources. Davistroy pretty much nailed it for color. I ran this whole M.A.S.H. thing past my 12yo daughter last night. She was appalled and said she would refuse to let me take her to school in the Jeep. I'll have to work on that issue. I started looking for 16" steel rims yesterday. Every Willys project or parts truck on local Craigslist was wheelless. Apparently the wheels go very quickly. This is fun.

    I seem to remember high rank officer jeeps back in 75' were gloss olive drab. Four or five years later found semi gloss alkalyd enamel O.D. green at a surplus store that looked the same as those officer jeeps, used it on a pickup and looked great. Remember this was a transition era from the M38a1 to the M151, so the only M38A1's I saw were the officer jeeps that they hung on to. Never saw any mutts in gloss.

    I think the gloss Gillespie paints are the same number except they start with a 1.

    14052 = Gloss Marine Corps
    24052 = Semi-gloss Marine Corps
    34052 = Lusterless (Flat) Marine Corps

    WWII paints were a little different. If you go onto the military sites like G503 and willymjeeps.com, you will see reams of paint discussions.

    I THINK 30277 was used for desert vehicles at some point, but depending on era, there were probably many different paints and schemes. Again, the "G" or willysmjeeps are good places to ask about paint colors for certain years, branches, and locations.

    I'm just a grasshopper among many master Jeep guys here.
