Okay, I think I have given my Holley TA 470 a fair shot. I just think it is too big for my little 231 V6. I have a bog off idle if you stab the gas hard. You know the stab you need sometimes to get out of a jam! I have sent it back to Holley and each time they tell me "just drop it on right out of the box, ready to go". I'm finished with it. I really want to try a 2bbl Motorcraft that I hear good things about. I don't need the 4bbl anyhow but my motor had the intake on it when I bought it. It was running a AFB that ran great but got like 9 mpg. It was a 600cfm and was scary rich but it ran pretty good and did not bog. The reason I changed was it would die going down a steep hill. That was not fun. So now I either find a Ford 2bbl that will work or start looking at some form of EFI. What donor Ford is the best to find the best sized 2bbl?

AMC 304's and Ford 302's from the 70's are your best donors for the MC2100. They will have the small "1.08" venturi size which should be about right for your Buick v6. The size is identified in a circle on the left side toward the front of the carb, behind the accel pump linkage.

I ran one on a 232 AMC six in a Scout as well as the former AMC 304 in my current CJ5, and I think they are great carburetors. Lower the float level slightly and make sure the float dampening spring is in place, and they perform excellent off road.

Here's a good link to use as a guideline:

    http://www.4secondsflat.com/Carb_CFM_Calculator.html

Consider that your 231 will never see the far side of 5000 RPMs and that the VE of most stock engines is around 75% and you'll see that only need 250-320 CFM TOPS. As noted you will have to run a larger carb MUCH richer than normal to make it run decently at low RPMs and the efficiency will be awful when doing this.

The Rochester 2GC was stock on the Dauntless 225 and is generally well-regarded off-road. Youmight want to look for one of these and a stock manifold to put it on.

AFAIK the float dampening spring only appears in AMC Jeep carbs, and only after 1973. There was a service bulletin in 1973 re fitting a spring to 1972 CJs.

I had to look inside several Jeep 2V carbs at the junk yard to find one with a float spring. Apparently the commercial rebuilders do not reuse it.

Also look at a Holley 2300 350 CFM 2bbl. Almost identical to the MC2100.
I've run the 500 cfm version on a 304 with excellent results.

Mmm. I would avoid the 2300 for a Jeep. Not a very good off-road carb without a lot of modifications. Works great on the street, but floods badly on hills and bumps. BTDT.

There's another Rochester 2V that's well regarded for Jeep use - I recall it's like a 2V version of the Quadrajet. Search for "Rochester Dual Jet."

I am running the MC2100 on my 304. I do not have the float dampner spring but wish I did. My float is set very low. I will stall once in a while but it has to be very steep. I am happy and will keep it. I have found some on E-bay pretty cheep. they are easy to rebuild also.

Super, thanks. I will try a MC2100 before I take the EFI plung. I have some questions about the odd fire set up with EFI that I need to do more reading on. For now I think a 2bbl intake and a mc2100 will be a fun project. My problem is now that I'm running the TPI on the GPW I am really unhappy with the 470/231 combo. Man I got spoiled with one wheeln' trip with EFI. It is just awsome.

put a larger acc. pump nozzle in your holley TA. Thats what I did and the bog is gone, it snaps your head back now.

I agree with you. I have had EFI Jeeps myself. Howell makes a very good fuel injection system for these motors. I really like the dependability and easy to work on carbs when something craps out 300 miles back in the forest.

Sparky you confused me a little there. You like the EFI from Howell but prefer a carb? Remember, I live in Indiana, we are never more than a mile or so from a farm!
