Hey I am looking at two Jeep cj-5's one is a 68 with the V6 and the other is a 79 with a 258. Is one going to be better than the other they are both similar price and condition. Also how would these jeeps be driving on the highway? Thanks for any help

From one newbie to another, depending upon condition and the work you need to do, the parts for the 79 are going to be easier to find and buy.

More info would be good (pictures!)... You may want to list the tires/lifts on each... that will also affect your highway driving.

The 79 will have a stronger frame, disc brakes, open knuckel Dana 44 front axle, tilt wheel /w power steering and other modern conveniences if its not been hacked up. The road manners of the 79 are way better then the early Kaiser models as well. The rear axles on the newer CJs were not the best from what I've been told. The down side is that if you live in a "SMOG" state like the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia, you're going to have a nightmare keeping the thing legal every two years. For this reason alone I would buy the 68, because you never have to smog the thing and you will have a good platform to improve on if you want to upgrade. I also think the old V6 Jeeps are just plain cool IMO and you dont see many of them around these days.

If your primary intention is to drive either of these on the highway, I'd suggest you take a test drive first. You might be about to enjoy your first rodeo.

They are both factory ride height and similar tires. I realize they won't be the smoothest riding vehicles but what speed would you think I could cruise down the highway at? Thanks for all the help so far.

My bad. Dana 30. The disc brakes, open knuckel and Saginaw steering box are a plus. I dont know if the 68 has the Ross steering gear or not but if it does, keep her below 6o mph:shock:
