I need a new tail light lense for a 73 CJ 5. The bucket is still in good shape, but the previous owner apparently overtightened the screws and cracked the lense. Are they available and where should I look?

    Many thanks.

I could never find them, I always had to buy a whole new assembly at autozone for 8 bucks.

I have heard there is a Grote part number for them, but I can't confirm. I did see some new Grote buckets and lenses (complete unit) in my local FLAPS the other day that are almost a dead ringer for the original (not the cheesy boat trailer variety).

Do you remember what FLAPS you were at? I looked on Grote's website and I think I see the ones you mean. I have been looking for taillights for a 74 for so long that I really willing to go with something "close".

I refuse to pay $75+ per taillight on ebay! The people that charge those prices hurt the hobby for all us true fans.

The Grote Lens is 9034 (Napa equivalent BK6802224)

Sorry, don't have the housing. I can check when I get home if its stamped on it somewhere.

That's the key, my FLAPS is not a chain store, it's one of the last of a dying breed of independently owned and operated auto parts stores. Not affiliated with Napa or Autoclone or any of the others. :)

Next time I'm in there I'll write down the Grote part number.

Good housings are scarce, but as listed above, the lenses are still in production. I bought a pair of lenses through one of the Jeep specialists - I presume they are repackaged Grote lenses.

If new buckets are available (I think they are not), I would like to hear about them.

I bought a set of lenses from Crage Motorsports in Savanna, TN. (jeepcdoc.com) for my '73. They said the complete lights are not available any more, but had the lenses for $6.00 or so. I had one bad light - I put one of the smaller lights (60's vintage) inside my '73 light housing, and it is original on the outside. They still make the little (3 inch or so) lights - I think from Omix-Ada. Crage had these also.

Thanks. If its stamped in an obvious place it would be great to get it. Otherwise no worries.

I'm a newbie so please don't flail on me for this question: are these the round lights that protrude off the back, not the ones that look like they are off a trailer? My '75 has a glass tub so I'm not sure what was original to it or not...:?

The OEM is round and are mounted on the surface of the body by two bolts. They look similar to the round trailer lights, but have a metal housing that looks a bit like an old fashioned top-hat if placed on end (with the lens end being the brim of the hat).

Thanks for the clarification. They must've used trailer lights on mine, I'm pretty sure the housings are plastic.

OK, my bad. Just took a look and they ARE metal housings, I guess I have an original set. Not to hijack this thread, but can anyone tell me (or better yet show me) what the reverse lights are supposed to look like?

I bought a new set of the tail light lens for my 71 which uses the same ones at our local NAPA 3 years ago. They had 1 in stock and had the other 1 the next day.
