    Hi Guys,

This is the 1st time I am posting in any forum. I need your help.

    Jeep CJ5 1969 model with D44 axle

This morning I tried to assemble the rear hub, after a long clean-up, paint and replacing of the axle cup & bearing, new oil seal, I put the Hub on the axle shaft and tighten the nut, but the hub would not sit-in correctly. In fact now it has a ½ in gap. This is without installing the lock key.

I know there is a taper on the shaft, but previously I was able to remove it without a hub puller (which shouldn’t be the case).

I need to know if I need to take it to a press, to fit the hub/flange on to the axel shaft or what is the problem and how can I fix it.

    Thanks !

    Best regards,………..Dinesh (Sri Lanka)

    Dinesh,

Welcome! Is there any chance of taking a picture to show us what you are seeing?

I don't think the axle is in all the way. Can you wiggle the axle back and forth a bit to see if it goes in further?

I'm sure one of our experts will chime in.

I see what appears to be part of the bearing cage. Looks like you should be able to grab hold of that axle and pull it out. If thats the case, then you need to remove that old piece of bearing and race and install new bearing and race w/new seal..

OK! I removed the hub, to give you a view along the axle shaft. I am sure there is nothing that will knock on the hub except the oil seal around it.

New photos after the hub it taken out. Here's the link
    http://picasaweb.google.com/Jeep314141/Jeep#

Also would like to know if a thin layer of rust can stop the hub from going in fully.

Also my bro told me to tighten the nut fully, which will push the hub in. But so far that had not worked + now the nut is stuck as well

    Appreciate your suggestion

    :?
    looks correct to me
not possible to put the backing plate on incorrectly as the hole in the plate won't fit over the flange of the housing......

    Dinesh,

Is it possible the key is riding up in the Keyway? I believe the SM tells you to assemble the hub to the axle and then insert the key.....probably for this very reason.

I don't like the looks of the axle where the hub rides...looks gaulded to me.
what's the inside of the hub look like and the condition of the hub keyway ?
is it just me or does everything still look dirty/greasy in the photos ?
a good clean up is needed.

Yep, when assembling those, make sure there is no, no grease, rust, paint, buggers, fly droppings, nothing inside that hub or on the axle taper.

Bearing should be installed hub side of axle? If I'm seeing it right?

Here are a few pictures showing the location of the bearing with relation to the ridge on the axle.
