I had the frame of my cj5 powder coated a little over a year ago and it's aready got rust coming through. It's a rolling chassis. I don't know if that has anything to do with it but I'm not happy. I thought powder coating would keep the rust off. What are u guys useing for rust prevention on the underside of your rigs?

what did you do to prep it? If there was any rust its only a matter of time before it comes through

I took it to a shop. They said they blast before they coat but obviously i didn't stand there and watch to make sure. The frame looks smooth but there are pin head spot of rust coming through.

Powder coating is not real great, on frames. It seems like it would be, but the way it's applied, it doesn't flow into tight corners very well. If your rust bubbles are appearing in open areas, it was probably the prepwork.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did they charge you to sandblast and powdercoat the frame?

It cost $500 for the frame, seat brackets, and alot of misc. parts off the jeep. And I am seeing the littl;e rust bubbles coming through in open areas. What prep work should have been done that wasn't?

The reason that I asked how much it cost, was to gauge how much work might have been done.

I built a front bumper for my jeep. Nothing fancy. A piece of rect. tube, with 2 shackle hangers. It cost me $275.00, to have it sand blasted, and texture powder coated.

I also just had a cj5 frame sand balsted, only. It didn't take the guy long to blast it, as I had already aircraft stripped it clean, and wire wheeled the whole thing.(I was hoping to get it clean enough to NOT have it blasted, but gave in, and had it done, after all). he charged me $230.00.

I got a price, a few years back, of $400.00 to powder coat ( no blasting ) my frame.

What I'm getting at is, you seemed to get a lot of work done for $500.00. Perhaps they skimped on the quality of blasting, and left some rust in the pits, or didn't clean the blasting residue properly.

Or...maybe prices are just higher here, than where you are...

Sorry for resurecting a dead post but I had to make a comment....

We build 2 million dollar packaging machines. The entire frame is powder coated how ever we do have the frames mettalized before being powder coated. This prevents the frame from rusting. Another option is to zinc coat (primer) the frame before powder coating. What that does if you get a chip in the powder coat the rust will not go beneath the paint, it only stays in the spot where the chip is.
