Hi everybody. This is my post here at earlycj5.

As the title implies, I’m gearing up to install a 4” BDS lift on my 1980 CJ5. The whole idea is to clear
    33-12.50-R15 tires on 15X10 wheels.

What I have sitting in the garage:

    4” BDS suspension lift w/shocks/rear 4* shims
    BDS TC 1” drop kit
Rubicon Express drop pitman arm for PS

I’m just nervous about doing the install as the CJ is driving so nice right now even with the sagging factory springs.

I’m also a member over at JF as I also have a stock ’86 CJ7. I’ve read some stuff over there that is simply making me nervous about some of the post lift grief members have experienced. One member reported that after installing a TC drop kit his valve cover (258 I-6) is now touching the firewall.

Things I know I’ll have to address are drive shaft lengths & angles, brake hoses, & e-brake cable. Also, the sway bar has been removed.

Sorry for the long winded post…I don’t have a specific question. I guess I’d just like to hear from some others who have installed a 4” lift on a CJ5. Also, I’d be very interested to hear any other issues that popped up for you after installing a 4” lift.

I’m posting this here as most of the responders over at JF have never driven a CJ5. I think we’d probably all agree they are a different animal than a CJ7. Heck, my 99% original 1980 CJ5 has a redline in the speedo at 55 mph!

Any replies will be appreciated. Thanks for looking.

    B

Don't sweat it. Take your time. Follow the instructions. Get it aligned right after the lift is complete. Enjoy. BDS manufactures a quality product. You will more than likely enjoy your Jeep's ride and handling more after the lift, even with the raised center of gravity.
I'm hoping to take the 2.5" Skyjacker lift out of my '77 CJ5 this winter and replace it with a Rubicon Express 4.5" Extreme kit. I have 33's on mine with the current lift and love it.

P.S. In 1980, the speed limit was 55 mph nation wide. Many vehicles had a mark there.

Dude, no issues. You will have no problems you can't handle and you'll enjoy working on the jeep.

And get lots of PB Blaster.

    And cold refreshing beverages.
