I was hoping someone could help me with this. I just bought a 1970 CJ-5 and discovered the front end gears are removed and there is a hole in the actual case, not the cover of the front end. I was hoping someone could direct me where I can purchase a new Dana 27 from hub to hub.

I have found multiple sites that sell Dana 27 parts, but I'm unsure what the entire axle is called. I found a few sites that sell Dana 27 "carriers". Is this what I am looking for. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Matt

You won't find a new complete unit. If you do want to replace the whole thing, your best bet is to find a good used one...Post a "want to buy" in the classifies section here.

I had a problem like yours with a '69 CJ5 - hole punched thru the bottom of the case and my spider gears were destroyed. I found a parts jeep with the same differentials (front and back) as mine (read the tag that's attached to one of the cover bolts - it will tell you the ratio and # of teeth) and found that I could use a lot more than the differential. Keep your eyes peeled for a parts jeep. Around my area they can be found sitting behind hunting camps and barns. I believe gear ratio needs to be the same front and back.

i also have a 70 cj5 i think. i have a plate riveted to the dash that says mine was built in 69 but i am assuming it was sold as a 1970 right? where are you located? i have a d27 that i would like to sell and upgrade to something stronger, like a d30 or d44. i have to do some homework to see which will be the easier swap.

I've just learned about reading the axle tags and wrote about it on my Jeep blog, Jeep-jitsu.

I cant wait to break 'em open and see what condition they are.
