68 cj5 225 radiator

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by LilRed68, Jul 7, 2009.

  1. Hi all its been a while but any way. . . . about 2 years ago I had a little mishap out on a trail ride involving a branch, my radiator and a big ol' hole . . . . All the wireing got melted/shorted out due to my smart idea of trying to get back to a main road and the radiator is like a big hunk of swiss cheese. . . .well the jeep got parked because I just dident have the time (too many projects). Im now on the last leg of the "rat rod rebuild" but my radiator is toast and my only option so far is a re-core, at the tune of $535 . So since I dont really wanna drop that big of a pocket wad on a re-core, is there any other radiators that will fit my cj5 w/225 or as they seem hard to find, any place where I would beable to find another original.

All the race shops like Speedway Motors sell good cheap aluminum radiators that are easy to mount. Might even cool better.

    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

I just bought a 65 mustang radiator from radiatorbarn.com It's 3-core, lifetime guarentee, 156 bucks, free shipping, and a direct replacement. Even the bolt holes lined up perfect. I shouldn't say direct replacement, I had to have a radiator shop take the straight bottom output, and solder a elbow bottom output. It cost 40 bucks, but I had done so much searching for a radiator that I didn't care. The radiator guy said the radiator was excellent quality and a great deal. I had the elbow put on because the hose was hitting a pulley. My v6 is a swap though, and seems to be mounted kinda low. Not sure if you'd have the same problem.

  9. Just got back from our local race shop and the guy there said he could fin me an original for about +/-180 bucks, but he also had a few aluminum "universal" radiators that would fit up great for about $150 so i think im gonna go that route, cant beat the look of them either.

Hi all, new to the forum. Great site. I need a replacement radiator for a 67 CJ5. Should I take the same advice and look into a fiero or mustang radiator? If so, what model year for those two cars should I be targeting for a radiator that will fit?

    Thanks for your help,

    Mike

Thanks, Jim for the friendly reminder. I'll have a look. The fiero and mustang rads won't work for me as I have a F-134 engine and a battery box at the front of the block to deal with. I've got good vertical space, but not so much horizontally. The Fiero is too wide and the mustang, while almost perfect on dimensions, has the I/Os on the wrong side of the rad.

    I'll keep searching.

Mike, if you have an old-time radiator shop nearby, check with them on moving the Mustang radiator outlets to the opposite sides. Moving radiator outlets used to be a common strategy in engine swapology.

This is exactly what I needed to do when I put the Ford 5.0 in my cj6.....cost me $50 if I remember correctly

So i recently had my radiator re-cored from Sanford Radiator in Sanford Maine.
They guy there said it wasn't from a jeep...he claimed it was from a bronco. I told him that it was from my 1970 CJ with a 225, and that I had a hard time finding certain parts for it. any how, hope it helps

Sounds like there is a serious shortage of good radiator shops across the country, they are now rarer than an honest lawyer.
Or is it a result of the new unrepairable radiators and lack of parts to recore, etc?

I probably paid too much, but I had my 225 radiator recored to the tune of $310 by some old fossil here in Austin. It was one of the first things I did in the rebuild exercise and I hadn't done my homework on sites like this.

Yeah, it's a bit high by a 10 year ago standard but anymore, I don't know.
The "old fossil" probably smoked and drank a bit, and knew how to do the work better than anyone around here.
