I installed a fresh 304 in my CJ5. The old motor didn't have a thermostat, but I installed a 190 in the new engine. Used the same radiator and fan. It overheats on a lengthy ride. The timming is right on. What sould I look for. I thought it might be the radiator since the old 304 didn't have a thermostat. It is the original radiator so I'm guessing it's a V8 one.

do you have a fan shroud? that could help. Also make sure you have a good radiator cap.

I didn't know that CJ's had fan shrouds. I looked for a new one online and couldn't find one listed anywhere. I can try replacing the cap.

I ordered a new shroud to replace teh broken one on my CJ-6 from Walck's. It's an Omix-Ada item, IIRC.

A fan shroud will definitely make a difference, Do you have a direct drive fan or a clutch fan ?
The clutch fan can wear out and cause overheating.

"The clutch fan can wear out and cause overheating."

and if you are lucky go through the radiator.

The fan is a direct drive. Thanks, I found a shroud on Ebay. I'll give that a try. I also bought a mechanical temp guage today at AutoZone for $20.

If it's the original rad it has prob had some Bar's leak through it at some time. It could be plugged, even just from sediment. I have also bought thermostats and them not work.

If you replace the radiator, get a 4 core.

I think I tried a 190 thermostat in mine and it ran too hot. I have a 160 degree now and it is still runs a little hot. Depending on year, it may have not come out with a fan shroud. I know the 73 did not, they added them in either 74 or 75. I wish I knew if a later one would fit my 73 before I hunted one. I also have to run my radiator a bit lower in coolant than I am comfortable with or it blows it out (no recovery tank on a 73).

I run a 180 stat in my cj and an electric fan over a big ol aluminum radiator. After it warms up, the temp never drops below 180, and is controlled only by the fan cycle.

I love how my electric fan works, but it is a loud one.
