Torque arm???

    I am thinking about making a torque arm to stop wrap up. I have an Idea how to do it but I want it to NOT hinder suspension movement. :?

    Any pics out there of what you have made or bought. I have a CJ 5 with spring over.

    As long as your bar is as long as the distance between your front spring bolt and axle center it shouldn't hinder suspension cycle. The better the rod ends and or bushings that you use, the better off you will be in the long run.

    I was going to use heim joints with misalignment spacers. I will get under it and check things out.

    You can get away with the length not being exact on you torque arm. You will need an upper link above the axle .and lower link below the axle mounted to a swing shackle forward. A few companies make pre-fab units...Sam's Offroad comes to mind if they are still around.

    I have seen those but I dont get the theory, seems like it would bind on the upswing.

    That's what the shackle on front of the torque arm is for. Your axle is going to move in an arc. On compression the spring is going to get flatter thus moving the axle backward, and the shackle on the torque arm will rotate down following the axle. On droop the springs will arch bringing the two spring eyes closer together moving the axle forward and the shackle on the torque arm will move forward.

    With the top and bottom connections on the axle side it prevents the axle from twisting up (moving pinion up) and turning your springs into an S and the rapid unload of the springs back to their original shape (wheel hop).

    Yes, Its hard for me to understand how the two points on the axle are fixed. It seems that the axle would move straight up and down and not arc. If it in fact does arc then it makes sense and would be easy to build one.

    There is a pretty decent write-up on the Jeep Tech page as well as a crude drawing, but it is really pretty simple.
