So I am tooling along enjoying a nice Summer day this past weekend, on my way back home. My clutch linkage cable broke the 'turnbuckle' end off and the fork of the linkage rapped against the bellhousing.

I walked back 50 feet to the scene of the crime and found my cable laying on the ground. The turnbuckle end was PLASTIC?! With metal rings formed inside?

Is this a cruel joke? I hope there are metal cable ends out there...

    No photos - No camara.

Sorry. My cable has the ball on one end, and the plastic piece of crap on the other end.

The turnbuckle end is threaded I guess any idiot could find a plastic turnbuckle if he looked hard enough. That steel or cast turnbuckle shouldnt be too hard to find.

My clutch cable broke last fall. Found all the cabling and turnbuckle materials at Napa. (I believe the cabling I used was intended for a parking brake application).

So, I found steel turnbuckles. $4 bucks each on eBay.

I flipped through my Chilton manual, and realize that the PO got rid of the original cable from the pedal to the pivot tube and replaced it with another pivot tube welded to the frame under pedal.

Is this common? Was it a kit or fab?

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Jeepster cables were notorious for pulling up thru the floorboard at the pedal end.

That explains the homebrew cable I have then

I have an aluminum turnbuckle from the pedel to the floor then one of the PO's used some type of farm equipment cable by the looks of it. No guides, but it has a sheath that it slides thrue the entire length.
they could not figure out how to anchore it and just wraped it around the frame a few times.
the cable works OK, but I am trying to replace it becouse its freying aat the transmision.

You gotta love the fab you find on Jeeps R)

I went through several cables over the past few years. Turns out the plastic inside the sheathing was melting to the cable since it sat over one of the mufflers. Anyway, I replaced it with the chain linkage from Advance Adapters and have been extremely pleased with the performance. I have had no problems since installing last January.

A little late to the party, but I had a cable on my 71..notice I said "had" after having to constantly adjust it due to cable stretch and then finally one day it snapped...the best thing that had happened at the time cause I swapped to a hydaulic setup and am never looking back...what a huge difference not just in ease of pushing but in overall feel of the pedal makes it very easy to feather the clutch when needed offroad.
