    What's not stock about the VIN? Is your Jeep not a '60?

    mine has the number stamped on passenger side behind rear tire, not painted. That painted number looks military to me.....

    Yeah, the VIN is stamped in the top of the frame, not painted.

    Part number. I'd only expect that on a service part, but a service part could have been used on the line at the factory, if needed.

    Yup, frame part number probably stenciled on by the subcontractor that built the frame.
    Since that survived you might also find other markings either with paint or wax pencil to show different assembly details.
    The GM restorers go nutty over that kind of detail and duplicate it on carrestorations. None of it ever seems to have survived in the jeep world.

    Could be an old Navy jeep? All of my work trucks over the last 30yrs have had numbers that all started with 94. These numbers were painted almost anywhere , Just a thought.

    "948942" has the right format for a Jeep PN of that era. Can't prove it, since I don't have parts books that go back that far, but all the Jeep PNs of the 50s had six digits starting with 9. Earlier PNs were six digits starting with 7 or 8.

    here ya go Steve
    first number listed from the parts book.
    replacement frame assy for V6 with T14 trans, non heavy duty.
    83= CJ5
    05=open body (duh)
    LHD=left hand drive
    the asterik next to the footnote 11-2 at the top tells us this frame would come equipped with the 1-1/8" diameter bellcrank bracket for stock Ross steering.
    note that the number changed to the new number of 991007; the G175974 number would indicate a nut, bolt, washer, or some other type/kind of fastener needed to use the new number.

    There are over 25 different frames used for the CJ-5 models alone through 1971.

    # 948942 was for CJ-5 LHD only having V-6 and T-14 A with a split brake system .
    This frame also has a later bellcrank bracket which uses a specific bellcrank shaft having special washers.
