I am trying to install bushings in my spring hangers and destroyed the first one beating it with a hammer. Now its stuck halfway in and my only choice is to melt it, sawzall it and replace it. I've done bushings before on my 74 and somehow managed to get them in Its been to long to remeber, but I assume then went in easy with a hammer.I just went and threw the rest of the bushings in the freezer hoping for them to shrink a little.
I cleaned out the hangers a little with a file. Should I be using a press? Like the balljoint press? Like I said, I'm sure I've beat them in before with a BFH. But this time they go in halfway then mushroom over.

I've searched a bunch but only found how to remove bushings, not install them. Thanks for any input. :)

I used a nut and bolt. Fine thread is better. Much stronger. Also used oil, It helps.

I tried the C-clamp and then big hammer route. Didn't work. Small hammer with light taps and plenty of white lithium grease and they went right in. Red poly ones did anyway.

I have successfully used the nut, bolt and washer method - well lubricated and going slow. I did not use an air wrench as I did the first time and mushroomed out the outer jacket (OE type bushing). Just slowly wrenching them in worked fine.

Geeze I wish I had thought of a nut and bolt earlier. I rented the press last night and used an impact gun on it. They went in slow but I couldn't get the last 1/16" to go in. I ground it off flat. Should I replace them or will they be ok?
