I am having trouble figuring out what year my cj5 is. Long story short-bought from PO w/no registration. Original owner long since gone. No s/n tag. hasnt been plated since mid 70's according to what PO remembers. Bought w/no engine.
Found s/n on frame by engine-49897, but after some research, my understanding is this is only a partial.

After looking at pics of various years of Jeeps, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to when or where the "Jeep" stamping is located on the side of the cowl just behind the front fenders. Mine is located about 6" from the bottom, others are about 10".

Key on the dash and rear gas tank -- I'm pretty sure -- exclusively means 1972 - 1975. My 1972 has a tailgate and -- I think -- the non tailgate models came later. You have round tail lights, as my '72 does. But looking at yours, I'm fairly confident they are not original.

Timgr is the guy who will answer this for you.

Yep, '74 or '75. Body markings say so. Molded padded dash says '75 to me, but I can't rule out a '74 with a molded pad.

Body color windshield frame indicates '74 or later - I assume the windshield is not black under the respray.

A '75 will have the floors welded in, and a '74's floor bolts in, like the earlier years. That's the easiest way to tell, I recall. I recall '75 is the first year for a fuse box, otherwise inline fuses.

You can look at the engine build date, assuming the engine is original. The 304 has a tag on the valve cover, and the 6s have a number stamped into the block, below the spark plugs.
