Hi, everyone. I'm new to the forum and not very good with computers. I have '70 cj-5 that I swapped '71 buick 350 into. I cannot keep the thing cool. I had to remove about 3 in. of the core support just to make the brand new 3-core rad. fit. I'm running a 16 in. pusher fan due to space. Has anyone ever done a swap like this or similar to it with good results? I just threw about 3 grand at this engine(rebuild) and it pretty much just sits in my driveway. I'm frustrated and at my wits end. Please help before I push this thing off a cliff.

since it is a fresh motor and recently put back together, check and make sure you dont have to much timing. that can cause overheating.

I have the same engine in my CJ6. I used a later model grill assembly and a conversion rad. I am using a 18" steel fan off a 1961 Dodge truck. It is a tight fit.
The only time I see the temp go up is sitting in a fast food drive through, close behind another car.
Thinking about mking a shroud for it. and maybe putting some louvers in the hood.
I do have some pictures if you need them.
ware are you located some one might be close to you that could help.

My initial timing is 14, total is 32. I've been told that is about right, also no pinging. I'm located in Wenatchee, Wa. What did you gain by going to a later model grill?

I was able to get the rad. forward all the way. And it was ez not needing to cut up the shroud on the 70 grill.
I will post some pictures tonite.

Thanks Andrew. I bet you had to cut the back of the headlights off, right?

temp climbs to 230 and will still climb if under the same conditions. When I'm going down hill regardless of speed the temp will start to drop

All things assumed to be working properly... (H20 pump, thermostat, no air pockets after rebuild), is it possible you may need a higher volume water pump and/ or maybe a 4 core radiator?:?

There are factory repop fiberboard shrouds available for both the 6 and V8 models of the Intermediate Jeeps that will fit your grille. I have a V8 shroud coming, and my broken factory shroud, if you want some pics and measurements.

No room for the fan clutch?

Would electric fans be an option. A friend has one on his radiator in a 340 Challenger and before he installed it he had overheating issues that have since gone away.

    Hi, Andrew
Just a quick question. Did you have to modify the late model grill? Do you have any pics of the grill you chopped up? Why didn't you use the old grill?

I used a grill from a 75CJ5 , did not have to cut it at all, did have to change the location of the safety catch to fit my hood. .
The 75 grill was a bolt in.
I did a power steering conversion at the same time, used the front crossmember from the 75.

On the old grill I would of had to cut the shroud off to fit a bigger rad.
The rad I used was one for a Chevy conversion into a JEEP.

If you are looking for some patictular pictures let me know what you need to see, and I can take them.

First things first. Are you running a thermostat, and did you check it to make sure it is working? Also, do you know the history of the radiator? A good old-fashioned reverse-flush may be able to clear things out to let the rad work the way it is supposed to.

And yes, the fan shroud is worth it, it helps any fan be more efficient.

My problem is the width of the grill you have is 25 3/8 in. where the rad. goes. I would have to cut the flanges off my rad. to make it fit in your grill. Even then I might have to make more room in the grill. So it seems like no matter what I do I have to cut something (grill or radiator) to use the rad. that I have. I'm trying not to spend more $ on another rad. I think I would rather cut my grill some more than try to modify the rad. What do you think?

Yes, I'm running a 180 thermostat, double checked. As far as the history of the rad. it's brand new. I think I just don't have enough air flowing through the rad.
