  1. Heater Help
I do need to pick you guys brain again.
I am working on a 1964 cj5, my understanding is that the 1964 is a transition year, is this true? The 1964 heater used a pull cable dash assembly? then in 1965 they switch to the vacuum type, is that true?
It is also my understanding that at this point, if the Vacuum parts go bad you are up a creek without a paddle, since you can’t fix or replace them.

I have the heater out of my '65cj5 as part of the restoration. The heater does have vacuum controls. Although this one sat out in the weather for the last 15 or so years, the convertible top semi-protected the dash and instrument panel. The control freed up and seems to be OK after a light washing and lubticating with Kroil. I hooked the heater fan feed wires up to a 12-v. battery and the fan runs both hi and lo. Manually moving the duct diverter servos feels and sounds like the servos are operable, but I haven't found a vacuum source to verify this. All in all, considering the adverse weather conditions these units have faced (Wisconsin Winters) the heater system seems quite durable. I wouldn't be too quick to junk it without a little research into automotive heater manufacturers obscure parts availability.

My '64 has vacuum controls for the "air" and "def" dampers, and a cable to the mix door for temperature control. Here's a pic:

If exact replacement vacuum motors are not available, something can probably be adapted.
