The PO of my Jeep moved the gas tank to the back....it holds about 8 gallons and is one of the cylinder type gas tanks..........

Would there be any reason not to move the tank back under the seat where it originally was???

What year is this Jeep? If it's an intermediate, the tank was originally under the floor, in the back.

The earlier Jeeps had the under seat tank. I know my 67 did.. I was gonna buy a 15 gallon tank and move it under the rear like the newer Jeeps, but sold it before I got that far.. If it were me I'd buy a 15 gallon replacement tank and install it under the rear like my 75..

8 Gallons? Man, if you have a 304 that wouldn't even get you to the quicky-mart! I'd get her back to OEM, early or intermediate. Do you know what the reason for the change was?

I would go under the back if you want to change it. Unless you are wanting to make it all orignal that is.

I can think of no good reason to put it under the seat unless you just want originality. The rear mount puts it between the frame rails and is much safer. Think about it, with a seat mount tank you are basically sitting on 10 gallons of gasoline, that can't be good in an accident.

Just a comment, not a criticism - this is the intermediate forum, and is supposed to be about '72 or newer CJs. All these Jeeps will have the tank under the rear floor. The subject Jeep is a '67, so it would have had the tank under the seat. This is why I was surprised when the OP asked if the tank should be put back under the seat.

The under-seat tank installation is pretty easy; all you need is the tank, cap, sender, some plumbing and a hold-down strap. One downside of the under-seat tank is its size; 11 gal IIRC. The under floor tanks are larger, 15 to 18 gal IIRC. Definitely more work to install a tank under the floor though - see Mike B's page. http://www.boyink.com/splaat/ssdutch-comments/gas-tank-installing-rear/

You can install both if you want, with a valve to switch between them. I had this setup on my '73.

Re the tank safety, this article http://www.lostkjs.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=40202&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 says that the under-seat location was chosen for the MB so that there was less chance of a disabling hit from enemy fire. Putting the two best targets (driver, gas tank) next to each other makes the target size smaller, reducing the number of disabling hits. So, the under seat tank makes you less vulnerable to enemy fire, should that situation arise... :driving:

Or you can run both tanks and plumb them together.

Here is the pooh. I have a 15 gallon rear tank and the 11 gallon under seat tank. Great for long days of wheeling. Never worry about refueling. I have a selector switch installed. Works great. Even put in a relay that switches the fuel sender as well.
Now the down side. My under seat tank will leak from the fill neck when uphill and off camber to the left. Leaves smelly messy spots everyone else has to drive through. In addition, I'm running a SBC V8. Duel exhaust exits right under the fill neck. Needless to say, I don't use the under seat tank when I wheel.

I think ordering a replacement filler neck hose would be high on my list of to-dos, or at least practice your stop-drop-roll scenarios.
