Having never rebuilt an axle before, (I am a mechanic, so I'm not afraid to do it.), what all is involved in changing a pinion bearing. I know I have to remove the axle, and remove all the components just to get to it. I guess what I'm asking, is there any special tools I need to do this job? I already own a bearing race puller, but do I need anything special to remove any other parts?

    Thanks in advance.

Do you have a Factory Service Manual (FSM) for your Jeep? If not I'd get one. Very good info in there on this very thing. You might also check out Randy's Ring and Pinion web site for good info as well under "tech tips".

Some sort of factory service manual is ideal. Will walk you through the whole thing.

Is it the inner or outer bearing? The outer is the smaller more easily replaced one. You don't need a puller for the outer, although it can't hurt to use it to remove the yoke.

When you say race puller, do you mean bearing puller? You will need a bearing separator and most likely a hydraulic press although a puller might work. Most likely you will tweak the oil slinger when you are pulling the bearing, so get one of those as well. Reassemble with existing shims and you should be OK.

I'm not so sure it's the rear now. I can't feel any play in the yoke with the Jeep in neutral and on a flat level surface. I just rebuilt the trans and transfer case. I have a feeling that it may be in the clutch.

    Thanks for the help.
