Hew I am new to this. I have a problem with my 74 cj. The transmission keeps jumping out of first gear at low speed, also the transfer case will popout of 4 low. Not good when I am on a trail trying to climb a hill or when going down the same hill. Gets pretty interesting!!! Any suggestions on where to start? All the other gears are no problem.

    Walt,
Yes I have done a search and have not found what I need yet. I will be posting pictures of my jeep as soon as my internet connection is fixed.

O.K. I finally broke down and decided to rebuild the transmission and transfer case. As far as the transmission jumping out of first, I have no conclusion to this yet. First gear sincro. worn a little and the output nut was extremely loose.

Transfer case pretty sure the problem was the detent ball springs being broken in three pieces.

Anyways easy to rebuild just want to make sure you have a really good set of c-clip pliers before you start on the tranny. Mine almost didn't work.

I should have the Jeep on the road within a week or two to test my rebuild.

    Will post pictures soon!!!!!!!

Twin stick the tcase while you have it out. Looks like a nice job. let us know how it works out.
Who made the shift lever for the case? It might be bottoming out in the cut out in the floor. Twist the body a little and the flex may kick it into neutral.

I don't know who made the shifter!!!!! I did have to cut and weld it previously to keep it from touching the cut out in the floor. Now after the rebuild it has plenty of clearance. Hope to test drive it by this weekend.
