I bought a 70 cj5, that is completely stock and completely full of rust. The hat channels are gone. (as we all know. lol) I have never removed a tub before, is there anything I need to look out for, or any tips/tricks that anyone has would be appreciated. :patriot:

All I can say is good luck. I would get alot of plastic bags and label all of the bolts and hardware you remove. You may not reuse it, but you will know what size replacements to buy. Start with your hood and windshield frame, then the grill, and front fenders, then the tub. It might be a good idea to take alot if pictures along the way so if you have questions later you will have an idea of what was there prior to teardown. Pay attention to fuel lines, heater hoses, throtle cable. You will have to disconnect your clutch and brake pedal. I am sure I have left out a few things, but that will get you started. Mike

    Undo pedals.
disconnect drag link off steering box and unbolt steering box from frame.
unbolt (torch off) all body mounting bolts including one under grill.
    Remove radiator
Remove floor cover and remove shift cover on transmission. (cover tranny with a rag to keep crap out of it)
    remove seats and gas tank.
Disconnect engine wiring harness off engine at firewall.
Disconnect return spring for pedals and also one for parking brake drum on transfer case if one is still attached underneath.

Get three of your buddies over or even better rig up a couple of pulleys and lift the body off.

Definitely remove the steering box. I see a lot of people leave it on the frame and try to lift the tub over the column. It's only 3 bolts on the frame, and the 2 clamping it to the dash, plus the steering link. And don't pull the column out of the box without removing the box..

Wow. Thanx for all the advice. I guess I didn't realize there was that much involved. Reading some of the posts is like watching car improvement shows. They're done in 30 mins or less!R) Is there anyway to fix the hat channels without removing the tub? I'll get some pics of the project up soon.

Depending on what part of the hatchannel needs replacing, you might could leave the tub on the frame. I think it would be alot easier to remove the tub and give yourself plenty of room to work.

Lt, you're saying its worth going through the hassle of removing the tub vs. tring to repair it in place?

In a pnch you can get by with less. The guy next door and I have had mine on and off three or four times. You just have to plan it well :)

Pull the tub, Way easier! It's a lot of little steps but really not that hard and doesn't take that long. for the fist time it should only take a couple of hours.

The cool thing about jeeps is they are asy to work on. The tub sounds like alot of work to remove, but it isn't. Be prepared for what you will find when the tub comes off! The tub removal will be the easy part. I'm bettin' the underside of the tub will show you more wok that needs done.

Well... I guess since I'll be rained in tomorrow, that is what I'll be doin. Do I need to weld in any braces before I remove the tub? And, I've also been thinking of the grill & radiator, do I need to remove them as well? I know I have to remove the two braces, but all of that area is in good shape.
