I am contemplating installing one of the pre-made wiring harnesses with a fuse box in my '72 CJ5. Has anyone out there done this successfully and what advice do you have: any bad manufacturers to stay away from; how difficult a job was it; how long did it take to complete; any good tips; etc.????

Also, I have a stock alternator that I want to also replace during this process with a beefed up one. Any suggestions. I've had some trouble finding one in the usual Jeep catalogs.

I rewired my '75 with a Painless harness. The 'harness for the '75 is for the '75 through '86 models so I had to do a lot of custom work within the cab, but the engine and lights were fairly straight forward. For your application, if you go with a Painless kit, it is a less specific model, but should be fairly straight forward. The directions are good.

I have also heard very good things about the Centek kit from 4 wheel drive hardware. Additionally, 4wd hardware offers a number of alternators. Give them a call and ask... they also have a cataloge for early models that may be more helpful than their general catalogue.

I put in the universal early jeep harness in my 73,it went in pretty easy, all the wires where marked, it took a couple of evenings to do ,but not that hard and I dread diong wiring! They are a good chunk of change, but it was worth it!

I installed a Painless kit in my '71. I used the '76/up kit since I run a '78 CJ tilt column. I had a few unused circuits. Install went well, but I took extra time since it was my first rewire job, and my install was on a fiberglass tub which necessitated alot of extra ground wires.

I've heard Centech's kit is good.
I've also heard that thje E-Z wiring kit quality is as good as the others for about half the price:
