grey oil in differential?

    gear oil always smells nasty.


    Bill,
    I would wipe it out as best as possible, are refill with cheap 75w-90 gear oil. Drive it around a bit, anc change it again in 3 or 400 miles.

    FWIW when found them like that ( watered down ) we used brake clean to clean them up, then did the refill and drain after a few trips.

    Water emulsified in the oil. You have already taken the steps to fix it.

    Do you have a vent tube on the differential? If not, I'd look in to getting one. That's probably where your water's coming in.

    it's just got that nipple with a loose fitting cap on it.

    like i said before.
    from the looks of it the PO liked to drive around in water.
    but he wasn't big on .maintenance ....

    I ran my diff vents to the firewall, never had any problems with water.

    I agree with vent hoses. Mine all run up high with filters on them.
    However, I've seen more water in cases from sitting for long periods of time. Condensation is a real factor.

    i learn sumpin ever day.

    I've seen several that were left to sit with no water, and drained after xx years and had several cups of water in them..

    Most recent was a CJ6 chassis my Dad and I bought. Trans and transfer both had water in them, and they were bolted together, had all the seals in them, and were covered up with an old plastic bed liner. They never got rained or snowed on...
