hey guys, the other thread got me thinking, how well would a s-10 blazer 4.3 with the stock auto tranny adapted to my dana 18 fit in my 3b? i think its a 4l60e? or am i wrong? what does that translate to th400 or 700r4? and is that tranny good enough for light to moderate trail running? or just to much headache?

Headache simply because they are so long. Yes it can be fit but you end up with a very short rear driveshaft. Why the auto BTW other then it is already on the motor?

A turbo 350 is a couple inches shorter than the 700-r4. Because the oil pans on those trannys stick out to the passenger side, the xcase has to be spaced back quite a bit with an adapter. The whole thing just ends up being too long unless you stretch the wheelbase a bit.

I was also under the impression the 4.3L was too tall to fit under the hood without mounting it really low in the frame and having a large lift.

4.3 will fit fine. Besides, a 3b has a very high hood for extra room

I have a 1963 wagoneer that had the drivetrain upgraded to a 304/TH400/D20 set up. I have since stripped the body off and kept the frame and driveline. I have contemplated this swap but determined that this combination was way too long for my 1965 CJ5. I have a chevy 350 and a TH400 also, but even this is still too long. I have determined that the only way to fit this combo is stretching the wheel base by relocating the front axle forward and the rear axle back. This will probably eliminate the leaf springs and negate the use of a three or four link coil suspension.

    Just my $.02 worth.

I have the 4.3 and 700R4 combination in my CJ-7. With the Dana 300 transfer case my drive shaft is about 18 inches long. Those transmission are bullet proof, they put them in everything from Blazers to 1 ton trucks. The 460E is the electronic version of the 700R4. I believe they're the same size.

The 7 is 14 inches longer then a Flatty or a 5 in wheelbase so 18in driveshaft would be cut down by a lot.

ya... decided to not go with the auto. i've got a chev 283 adapted to the t-90 already so i think i'll just swap the 283 for the 4.3. the idea just crossed my mind and wanted to see what you guys thought. sounds like to much headache. thanks guys.

For some reason I though that the 700R4 and 4e60 were the same besides some upgrades and year made and was based off the Turbo 350 which was in cars and 1/2ton and light duty 3/4ton trucks?

The 4E80 was based off the Turbo400 and was in the Heavy duty 3/4ton and 1ton trucks and some heavy cars(turbo400) and RV's(Turbo475). Help correct me if this is not correct?

    Thanks,
    Kevin
