Okay, I have the wood piece inside the rear side wall for reinforcing the 2 lateral bolts. What about the 2 vertical ones? Are bolts, washers, lock washers enough? I've seen some put in a metal plate & I guess it is not visible with the tire mounted. Thoughts & recommendations? TIA

if I understand correctly..... my 66 had a wood block on the outside that the tire hit before riding on the body...looking at it , it woulda been top right

I have the tire stop but I am talking about bolting of the tire carrier to the side of the vehicle. Putting an actual spare on comes later...thanks...

Re-inforce it. If you hit it on a tree or some thing the mount will rip right off, leaving you with a big hole in the side.
I got the hole when I bought mine, and the PO welded the mount to the center of the tail gate. Real happy about that one!

The spare tire mount should have big plate welded across the wheel well. It'll also have a hat channel that raps around the rear corner. Two of the bolts for the tire carrier go through the well cross plate and the other two go through the hat channel.

I have one on my M38a1. I know...M38a1's don't have this. I bought on from Classic Enterprises. At the time I didn't know what it was. When I received it. I figure I'd use it. Helps to support the corner when you hit things.

If you want one from Classic, they told me I bought the last one.
