I'm trying to run the horn wire through the steering column but I can't find the hole at the bottom of the box. Where exactly is the hole supposed to be? I found a screw cap at the end of the box but I'm not sure if that's where the horn wire is supposed to go.

There is a metal cap pressed into the bottom, straight below where the column goes in. There is a metal tube pressed in the cap, or plug, that goes up inside the box.
You'll never get the wire fed thru the tube from the top without removing the column.
Hang on, I'll get a pic.

Here's a pic with the tube out, and one with it sitting in place, but not pressed in.

Easiest way I've found is to pass a thin, stiff wire (safety wire works well!) up from the bottom of the box. With the horn button assembly out, passs the wire up & out of the tube. you can tape a piece of 18-Ga wire to the stiff wire and gently snake the new wire down through the tube. I cut the wire about 4-5 inches down from the button assembly and then soldered the wires together, keeping the joint as slim as possible. Then I put a thin piece of shrink-wrap over the joint and it all slid down into place just fine.

Now if I could just find a replacement horn that sounds like a stocker, I'd be good to go... :(

That's how I did mine a couple weeks ago, after I forgot to run the wire when the new box was apart on my bench.

I know about the on at JC Whitless, they're cheap offshore-made crap that don't hold up. The original 6v ones also don't sound right on 12v, they get a really high pitch and it probably isn't good to run them on 12v anyway.

The best-sounding horn I've found so far is the old Road Runner "beep beep" horn, but they get outrageous prices for the originals now. I might just have to break down and buy one though, they sound just right!

I don't remember ever hearing the horn on an old jeep.
I just wired up a momentary contact button just below my turn signal switch, and put a pair of after market horns from Checkers on the fender well.
