Junk yard tub

Hey guys. I'm knew to this forum. Have a 75 cj5 that I've owned since 79. It's time for a new tub. A junk yard close by deals in four bys and mainly jeeps so in that respect I'm lucky. He wants $1000 for a 73 tub. The tub has diamond plate repairs on the sides covering rust, like mine. Alsohas a couple of diamond plate repairs to the rear just above where the rear cross member is, so obviously not a cream puff that was parked in the desert somewhere. Has a generous amount of rust on the firewall where the break and steering column bolt up. Thought the price was a little high. Just curious what others may have paid.

That's high, in my opinion. A brand new one goes for $3500, steel with a tailgate opening. If you get on Craigslist and search for a while, you can find deals. A tub like you described should go for $500 or less from what I have seen.

If you don't use it yet, get on Crazedlist.org and use that - it is awesome - lets you search multiple craigslists at once.

If you are OK with fiberglass you can find new fiberglass tubs around $600.

It took me a year to find the steel tub I wanted, but I got a hell of a deal on a basically new steel tub...good luck! :D

    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

I've seen pretty much rust free tubs for less then 400 around here

Thanks for the info. When I was looking at it I was thinking I would go no higher than $500. You kind of confirmed my evaluation was right on. I look at craigs list but so far only limited my search to my general area. I may have to expand!

Junk yards will (almost) always be a lot higher than buying private party. I'd guess between 50% and 100% higher, typically. Junkyard owners are often eccentric, and sometimes have funny ideas of what stuff is worth. This usually works against you, but not always. Sometimes you can get rare/scarce parts for generic prices, if you know the market better than they do.

I am in Tallahassee FL and I can meet you to deliver the tub almost anywhere in South and East Georgia. I did a frame off of a '79 and bought the tub from a guy on Ebay who swore it was for any jeep. Of course I did not know at the time about the difference between the 71-75 model and the 76 and up model. You pay to learn. I had to go to retail for the tub and it was $2k+ so at $600 this is pretty cheap for a new tub. There is a small hole at the shifter I put in trying to make it fit but other than that it is totally unused.

Ok, guys, please there's no need to discuss non-tech stuff in the tech section. There are PMs and there is no need to say "I sent you a PM" in the forum.

This section is for technical discussion, not for making deals.
