Will this tub fit my 79 frame?

    Intermediate tub onto 79 Frame...updates

Just picked up this tub this weekend, am not sure what year it is but am hoping to use it on my 79 frame. Don't believe it's a flattie tub, realize I have to move some body mounts and make some new holes in the firewall but believe it should work?

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Can't see the pics.

Look at the frame/tub mounts on the '79 frame. Where the frame gets wider, measure between the mounts side-to-side, see if they match the dimensions at the same point on the tub. If they don't match, you'll have to decide whether to make new mounts on the tub or the frame.

Did the tub originally have swinging pedals (circa 72 up) or through-the-floor pedals (55 - 71) ?
Tub mounts will be (essentially) the same for 55 - 75, then they change in 76.

What Lynn said. IMO, that looks like an early repo tub, no JEEP stamp, straight step riser, but has cowl vent bump uncut.

That would be my guess too. It's not a factory tub since it has no stamp. It's clearly the 55-75 style, from looking at the floors. The toolbox was removed, or more likely, deleted when the tub was purchased.

looks solid even if its a repro... i was trying to figure out what year it was myself. but your correct its an early tub.

youre gonna need to make some mounts for it via the tub, or the frame one... its not a bolt on deal.

that said, with it being an early tub, does it have a early dash in it that is hopefully uncut? your gonna want your 79 style dash im sure... id really like to grab an early dash thats not all hacked up.

Think I'm gonna set it on my frame this weekend and see how she all lines up. Will make new mounts on the tub if needed, already have the ones on the frame repaired pretty nicely.

Believe it only has one hole through the firewall at the pedals (inner wall) - there are 3 on the "outer" section as you can see in the pics (pedal area). I think the hole is the same location as my 79 tub.

It is solid - underneath too. Guy had it sitting in a dry garage for a few years, and it only has a little surface rust. I am trying to decide if it'd be best to get it blasted and painted right now, before cutting or welding on it, knowing that it'll be about 6 months before I get to mounting it (and it's too cold to do much fab work outside right now....no welder in the garage). Think that's probably the way to go...re-paint just the areas I cut or grind later.

The dash really gets me scratchin my head....to answer your question, yes I am going to use my 79 style dash. But the dash that came in this tub has two big speaker cutouts, and they appear to have been ordered in the dash, they definitely were not cut afterwards - holes are way too cleanly cut. Here's what it looks like:

If you are still interested, let me know...happy to trade it for a sixer of miller lite :)

I media blasted and immediately had it epoxy primered before I did my body work. I am very happy with how it has held up over the last year during the work. From the epoxy primer you can go to a undercoating or a finish paint or even a bed liner very easily as it is a good base.

no kidding... as for wanting that dash... if it were minus the speaker cutouts, youd have a 30 pack for it..... those would be harder to patch up than my current dash....

if i were you, id just go ahead and prep your tub, get the underside done the way you want it and get your tub painted and set it aside. go ahead and do your dash up the way your going to , have it all wired and ready to go.

then get the rest of your jeep finished up and put the tub on.

or you could leave it the color it is... it matches my jeeps original paint (or whats left of it)

Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like my next step is to get it up on the frame and see how everything lines up, do a little welding if necessary and then a sandblast + epoxy primer. Then put it on the back burner until the rest of the heep is ready.

Can't wait to get this thing back together. Made the mistake of watching Gearz last weekend, Stacy David showed how to clean up the exhaust headers and I decided I will do that too....but at some point I just gotta get it done!

Isn't that weird with the speaker cutouts??! I would think that somebody with a plasma table could make a nice 6x9 oval to fill in there if given a trace on cardboard...then weld from the back and grind smooth. Really strange somebody would order it that way.

You're not gonna leave it pink? Put a fringed bikini top on it and call it a surrey! :)

Allright! Got the body up on the frame and it looks GREAT!

It appears that the only thing I need to do is add a channel on the bottom of the tub, that all 3 body mount locations on the frame will tie into.

    Take a look:

Could there be a light at the end of this long tunnel?! It almost looks like a heep!

body mounts - 2 out of 3 that would tie into the channel. As you can see they don't line up with anything on the tub, but there is no interference with anything...a simple channel should do it:

The front will require an additional support perpendicular to the frame, but should not be difficult:

    back couldn't line up better:

rear support lines up perfect also:

So the big question is: Where can I find a channel, shaped like this one, that I can run along the body mounts?

I could fab up one if I had to, but I think somebody must make a stamped piece that would save lots of time and fab?!

Sweet....just found these stamped braces, for $12.25 I think I'm going to give them a shot and see what they are. Can't go too far wrong!

    C2C Fabrication Braces

That same place sells ones for CJ-7's too that might be a little longer, going to call them Monday.

This place sells what looks like the same braces, but they're more expensive.

    Hot Jeep Parts Braces

I also found some pics on Aqualu's website that give me an idea I can use to fab something if these stamped things don't work out.

After that a few nut-serts and we should be good to go.
