T-15 to T-150 swap question

    Hi all been a while but all has been great with my 73 till last month.

    My T-15 locked up and chewed up the main drive gear and the cluster gear.
    Well I have looked the worled over and cannot come up with a T15 that I can or will buy. I have found a T-150 and a Bellhousing from a 77 Cherokee that has a 258 6Cy in it that I can get cheap.

    If I understand everything right I do have to swap the bellhousing out on my 73, 304v8 to the newer one to fit the T-150 to my engine.

    My next question is the transfer case. Mine has the Dana 20 of course and the T-150 also had a Dana 20. Are these two Dana 20's the same transfer case. I have been told that while they will mount up on eqach tranny the seal are different. If I mount my Dana 20 onto to the 77 T-150 I will have a leak due to the different seals.

    Will the drive shaft have to be shortened? I ve been told yes and no.

    THe amount of confusion here is driving me nuts. I have almost 10 grand invested in my jeep and I know compared to the money I've already put into it the tranny is not really much, I guess but I do not want to get ripped off by the local jeep yard. What are yalls thoughts and suggestions.

    A '77 258 Cherokee would have come with a T-15. Why do you think that it's a T-150? The T-150 was only used in the CJ.

    Also, have you checked out Novaks website? It may be fairly inexpensive to rebuild your tranny vs swapping in something else?

    I have not seen it just going on what the guy told me was in his. I will investigate more. This could be good if your right. THe input shafts would be the wrong length but I could swap mine in right.

    Just buying the main gear and the cluster gear is about $400 and this and that else I will have to have and some other part that has a chunk out of it is gonna get expensive.

    I'm right. The T-150 is a Ford passenger car transmission, made under license by Tremec, and only used in the CJ. The Borg-Warner T-15 was offered in wagons and trucks through 1979, as well as in the V8 CJ from 72-75.

    A T-15 in a '77 258-equipped FSJ will have the same stickout as a CJ T-15, so sayeth the parts book. The input shafts are the same number. Only the V8 FSJs have long stickouts.

    Plus I've looked at these vehicles - I own both of them.

    The only way a FSJ will have a T-150 is if somebody swapped it in. Very unlikely.

    I now have the T-15 from the FSJ and yes, it is almost identical to the T-15 from my 73 cj-5. The difference is the front bearing cap. It is a smaller diameter than my cj tranny. The clutch shaft is the same but not the cap over the shaft.
    I think I should be able to use the cap off my cj tranny and put it on the FSJ tranny and everything should work fine, but how do I get the bearing cap off? I have taken off the bolts on the front that fasten it to the case and it will then turn about one full turn and then it stops and I can't move it any. HOW do I take the cap off?

    The bearing retainer? It should slide off if the 4 12-pt cap screws are removed. There's nothing else holding it on but the seal and the gasket. Or at least that's what I recall from 30 years ago.

    Dang, I wonder what the shipping would be on one, I've been looking for a spare for awhile. you and docscj5 are making my mouth water.

    I found a couple on ebay and the shipping was around $150 bucks. From tranny shops on the internet it can even be more. I wonder if they ship them by the pound.

    Note that Herm is able to ship these transmissions fairly cheaply, nothing like $150. If you make a box or pack it in a plastic cooler (I think I recall that), you can ship it by Greyhound or Forward Air. Forward Air only ships portal-to-portal (ie between shipping terminals) but most people live within driving distance of one. Greyhound is supposedly cheap (no personal experience), but may take a while.
