Well I'm still trying to get a heater/defroster in the old CJ. I have a truck sleeper heater in addition to the stock one. Neither one put out.
I see that the Moab heater is popular and sounds like a good one. What I really need here in not so dry Western Or. is a good defroster and a good heater. What do you guys do for a defroster?
I have had the Jeep since the early 80s and have been putting off rectifying this shortcoming.
I thought of having a sheet metal shop make a duct for the heater so a hose could be attached but it would cost close to what the heater does.
    Any suggestions?

On your stock one, does it have vacuum control dampers to direct the head to the windshield? If so are they working, because if not they have a normally closed air flapper held shut by a spring.

Thanks for the info. I cleaned up the vacum valve on the control and checked out the hoses but still no go for the defroster. I do seem to be getting some heat out the bottom though.
I'm North of you in the Willamette Valley near Schoals. If I come up with a soulution I will let you know SuperTodd. You still have all the stock heater on yours?

I sure have been having a problem with this website the past few days, SUPERSLOW. Am I the only one?

On these vacuum controller dashpots (2 each) one to direct air to floor and the other to direct to defroster are not precise instruments. Meaning the shafts are not mounted on bearings etc. The flap doors also have a felt seal around the door which can stick shut over the years. The vacuum diaphram controllers sometimes cannot open the flap due sticking seal or rust on flap shaft or even small cracks in diaphram causing loss of vacuum, reducing pull strength. Also your vacuum changes from full throttle to idle and this heater control does not incorporate a one way valve to lock open the flap once set at that position. Sucking on the vacuum line going to the diaphram and watch it pull all the way in then pinch off line and hold vacuum. If the diaphram shaft slowly retracts due spring pulling it back, then the diaphram has holes in it. A secondary vacuum cannister can be installed to help stop the flap cycling open/closed do vacuum change.

Walt, Sounds like you have done some work on these. I can see the dashpot on the left or middle is working. I can't tell about the one on the righjt or end of the housing/duct. Which one is for the defroster? I have been saving up some things to do the next time I take the dash apart. I guess that the thing to do is take it all apart and try to freeup and reseal the doors inside. Hoping not to have to but there are other things I can do while I'm there.
    I appreciate the pointers. Steve

Real easy to take out. 2 screws top and bottom where connected to blower housing and one at top middle connected to firewall. IIRC
