Don't know specifically if the AstroVan box will work - it's not a popular choice. Some of the cab-forward designs use reverse rotation boxes... not neccessarily in this case, but possible. Plus you want a fairly slow ratio for a Jeep, to give you leverage for big tires and easier control.

The popular choices are from Jeeps (CJs, YJs, Wagoneers, etc), from GM luxo-boat cars (Cad, Buick, etc.), and from the 4x4 S-10 pickup. There are probably other boxes that will work, but we know these will be ok.

I did not know that you can swap an S-10 4x4 steering box onto a CJ. You may have inspired me to remove my tired and sloppy steering box and visit the local salvage yard to search for an S-10.

The S-10 or Blazer 4x4 steering box is a favorite with the Wagoneer crowd. The only down side is that it's a 3-bolt box. To it's credit, the ratio is good for a 4x4, it has a variable ratio (slow at the center and faster away) and it's a modern design that stays tight much longer. The S-10 boxes you get from the yards typically need no adjustment.

Tim, just to confirm, the CJ Pittman arm and steering shaft are a direct fit to the S-10 box? Will the S-10 box have that inverted flare and o-ring fitting? I can't quite remember but I think the CJ box just has a double flare fitting for the steering box? Might require custom hoses?

I can't tell you 'yes, it fits exactly' since I haven't done this swap myself. However... I do know:

The S-10 type uses the O-ring fittings, and the CJ uses flare fittings (at least in the 70s). The S-10 box is a direct swap for the Wagoneer box, and I'm pretty sure the Wagoneer and CJ boxes are the same in terms of the splines and shaft at both ends. In ca 1986 Jeep switched to the O-ring style for the Wagoneer, so in that app, all you have to do is buy the later hoses. I expect there is something similar available from the Wrangler for the CJ, though I don't have any years or PNs for you. The O-ring style connection for the pump screws in to the back of the pump - go to the pick-your-part and take one off the back of a late Saginaw PS pump.

Good to know, thanks very much. I'm running a Chevy V6 in my rig now with the stock Chevy power steering pump. I had to have a special fitting that screwed into the back of the pump so it could receive the pressure side hose. With an S-10 pump I could probably omit the fitting and run stock Chevy hoses.
