    I have a 1957 CJ5. I assume the rear is a Dana 44. What about the front? a Dana 27 or 25? How can I tell?

Is there a stamp on the diff that reads 25 or 27?

Per the picture provided there should be one (item #3). My 27 has one.

Scape off the crud from the "web" of the diffy casting to see what you've won- kinda like a scratch off ticket. If I recall correctly the size of the numbers is around 3/8" tall.

Another "rule of thumb" way to tell is 25's have the vent in the cover and 27's have them threaded into the top of the housing.

The number is on the horizontal web on the left side on the top of it. (left of the pinion)
