Towing and Exhaust help

    Hey everyone I hope yall can help me with this small issue. Well actually its two issues. First off, ever since I've had my jeep (since feb 08) its always run good and never noticed anything wrong. My wife always makes a comment that I reek of exhaust fumes after I get done driving it. I have looked under her and don't see any leaks and the exhaust sounds fine. Is there something I'm missing or could it be a carb issue dumping to much fuel into the motor. Let me know what kind of ideas yall have on this one.

    Second, I might be moving from Pensacola to Jacksonville and need the best way to move my jeep. We have 3 cars, the wifes, my truck and the jeep. I was going to just attach a tow bar to the jeep and move it like that. What do yall think? Is this a good idea or is there a better way that could give me a trouble free trip thats not going to break the bank.

    Re the exhaust leak, where does the exhaust come out? The factory location for the end of the pipe is at the left rear corner.

    Towing with a towbar is fine if you have a big enough vehicle to tow with. A standard size pickup will be fine. Check to see that Florida law allows towing something as heavy as a Jeep without trailer brakes. Search for "flat towing" - you'll find a lot of threads to read ;) Flat towing is a controversial subject, but for just one trip you can take the conservative route and remove the rear driveshaft and unlock the hubs.

    The exhaust does come out at the rear left corner. Is this the problem or is something more in depth.

    Anyone who has driven a CJ, especially the older ones with an ill-fitting top, will experience the drawing-in of the exhaust. An extension on the pipe at an angle will somewhat solve this problem. Sealing the top where it meets the body will also do the same thing. Don't forget to do some sealing around the tailgate opening.

    As to "flat towing", the most important aspect of this type of towing is to have the towbar horizontal with the ground when hooked up. This can be accomplished by many variations in hook-up. The tow bar should not point up to the towing vehicle nor down to the tow vehicle. I learned this by experience.

    Also, don't try to break the sound barrier when towing. It is best to tow at a reasonable speed, not necessarily the posted limit.

    The really hot ticket for your trip would be to rent a car hauler, possibly U-haul type, and go that route.
    You will have trailer brakes, won't have to worry about un-hooking driveshafts. The combination will handle well if hooked up properly, which will be taken care of by an inspection of the rig before leaving the rental location. They generally will not let an unsafe combination leave the lot.

    If all else fails, rent a large-enough truck to haul the car inside and tow the jeep on a trailer. Just a thought.

    I towed mine from Maryland to New Hampshire on a uhaul, cost around 450.00 plus about 35.00 in EZPass fines.:)

    Driving under the speed limit in New York can be dangerous.

    Remove the rear drive shaft would be the best ticket to keep from burning up the transfer case bearings. Transmission in gear or if an automatic in park at ALL times. If you refuse to remove the rear drive shaft then every 150 to 200 miles stop, run the engine and transmission in low gear with transfer case in neutral, or better yet, unhook it and drive it around in low gear to lubricate the transfer case bearings, then continue on. Make sure trans and transfer case and all other gear lubricant levels are up to snuff also. Do a search on "flat towing". You will find more info that you ever wanted.....

    Thanks for all the info everyone. I think i'm gonna go ahead and rent a uhaul trailer just to save me any headaches during my trip.

    i personally HATe flat towing my rig. not to mention the wear and tear on gear, and tires, TIRES!!!

    i rented a u-haul car carrier before for a one way trip, i think it was about $140. look for an internet deal or just go in and grind the hell out of them. don't take their first offer, they will deal.

    good luck with move. i hate moving more than flat towing my jeep!

    Yeah I got an internet price quote of $120 not to bad for one way. I hear you on the hating to move part. I've been in the Navy for almost 10 years and I still dread moving days.

    Budget Truck Rental is usually a whole lot cheaper than U-Haul. I just rented a 16' Budget truck over Thanksgiving and drove my CJ up into it and hauled it from Missouri to Virginia. The one-way rental for the truck was under $400. Renting a car to drive one-way would have been $1/mile, or $1,200. :shock:

    I'm using my duramax to tow my jeep so i don't need a whole truck just a trailer and 120 bucks is way better than 400. thanks for the info though i'll keep that in mind for maybe a future endeavor.
