Does anybody have a link to a good writeup for getting into and doing a clutch on a Dauntless powered CJ? I have searched but not found. Got any links?

It's pretty much a pull old off/put new on. Not enough to it to do a write up. Mine's apart right now, if you want I can get you some pics for reference.:v6:

$45 is too much for you to buy a GOOD service manual but you own a Jeep? R) R)

    That there's funny!

Well considering that I eventually will be putting a Cummins 4BT, SM465 or NV4500, and Dana 60 axles under it, yeah $45 is too much.

Especially considering it will be obselete to me this spring upon purchasing the 4BT!!!

I'd think if you can do all that, putting in a new clutch should be a snap. ;)

Surprising to me that you would be considering such ambitious projects and need a walk-through for a clutch replacement. BTW $45 is cheap for a factory manual - look at the price of a manual for the later vehicles. If you'd like to buy the manual, cut it apart, scan it, and host it online, feel free to remedy this shocking injustice

    I don't need a walkthrough.

I am a marine engineer on a ship, so i am very mechanically inclined. i put my hands on diesel engines up to 15,000 horsepower everyday, six months a year. I am always wrenching on something. Motors, generators, compressors, hydraulic systems, etc, etc, etc.

I ENJOY READING WRITEUPS. i enjoy reading all sorts of stuff, on all sorts of forums that i am a member of, (at least 12 now). I am always reading technical manauls at work, and so the writups are a similar fix for me. Just don't want to waste money on a book either that will be useless to me in 6 months. YKWIM?

Sounds to me like a perfect candidate for a Chilton's... Basic R&R, cheap and available everywhere. I've got the Chilton's, Haynes and the FSM... OBTW, for what you've got planned; the cost of a FSM will be a "drop in the bucket"...

surf, I too enjoy reading writeups but I wouldn't trust myself to do a clutch job without a manual - at least a chiltons or Haynes. The FSM is the one I use the least but it does have some good info.

Not surprised that you're getting a bit of push back regarding not wanting to spend a few bucks on the FSM - many of the guys here really like it. No worries, it's all good.

Just thinking . . . a clutch job on a Jeep is very similar to most other rigs of the day. Maybe search for a writeup on "clutch job" vs "Jeep clutch job"?

A few things to note. Be careful on getting the correct (length) throwout bearing. Find a source for a new clutch fork in case the old one is bad. Sometimes the (new) pilot bushing can cause trouble if the ID is too small & have a plan to get the old one out before you get there.

BTW - I'm from Eastern Washington but that was a long time ago. . . .
