i went to change the oil in my newly bought jeep today, the guy said that its the 225.on the valve cover its stamped 149. does that mean anything. also wich oil filter do you guys use? i bought the fram ph11 like the computer and schucks said, but the threads on the filter are way bigger. is this actually a 225?

Just looked at the pics posted in your help thread. Cool find! The motor shown in the pic judging by the valve covers/cylinder heads, intake, and carb is a 231 Buick V-6. I'd definitely double check the #'s though.

You might want to google "oil filter tests" or such. Fram has a truly lousy rep the last few years. I use a NAPA gold filter myself, not the highest rated, but consistently rated in the top 3. My 258 is in great shape, and the last thing I want is to shorten the life of the engine by saving a dollar or two on the oil filter. But don't listen to me, check it out for yourself....

231s were never Jeep engines and yours is a '77 or '78 so that's pretty clear it's from a GM car.

Jeep never used the 231, just the 225 for a Buick V-6. They were common in Buick Regals, Chevy Monza's, Olds Starfires, Pontiac Sunbirds, etc.
Also used in some El Camino's, and other assorted GM Vehicles.

I got my 231 from an '80 Monza with a 4 speed wide ratio saginaw (used that too adapted to the 18 transfer case). 3.8-1 first gear ratio 4 speed with the 2.46-1 low range and 5.38 gears works great off road, and shifts quick for sand and mud. Not the greatest for rock crawling but makes a real good all around package on 33" tires. A little low for the freeway but an overdrive would easily take care of that if I were concerned about it.

    trickpatrick Done? LOL

    Just to add to that.
the 231 is the same block bored out more along with internal changes.
And so it will bolt in easily and is a common swap.

There is lots more that could be said on it but you can find it all here.
    Just search and read.:)

225 had a heavier flywheel, but I don't know about more power.

Probably roughly the same to be honest.

HP ratings aren't apples to apples due to changes in rating methods between the time these two engines were made.

i read somewhere the 231 is only like 105-110 hp, the dauntless is around 160

All engines after 1971 were rated net hp, that means they were rated running all there own accessories. All engines from 1971 an older were rated at gross hp which means they weren't even running there own water pump let alone other accessories. On most v8 engines the difference is about 35-45hp. So you can kinda figure that the v6 difference was probably around 30-35hp which makes them pretty close in overall hp.

I'm aware of what they're both rated at. Like I said, it's not an apples to apples comparison. Thanks for explaining more thoroughly Mcruff.

Just FYI - over the years I have had a couple 225s and 231s built about the same - they were always withing 10 - 15 HP of each other with the 225s a little more torque. It always seemed to work out that the 231s built a little more HP on the top end, and the 225s lower in the RPM range...

That doesn't count the one in the Red '51 as it's the strongest I've had by a LARGE margin.

As far as oilfilters go,I only use WIX filters on anything I run unless its amsoil. If you got some xtra bucks sitting around, buy your self an oil fliter cutter and look inside the top filters some day. You would be amazed at how much diff there is from brand to brand.

I agree with the fram not being the best. A PH11 will fit a 225 and 231 oddfire though. I do know because that is what I have in my JEEP right now. Soon to change. Wix and puralator are good filters. NAPA's filters are made by wix if you didn't know.
