    Howard,
Your 10 spline locker may indeed have come from a USMC M38A1 or M170 since a few and proud group of early military D44's had lockers.
The rear in the back of the CJ2A in question may already have a locker without the owner realizing its there.

So is a 327 ;), but a Jeep is such a light vehicle that it’s still a reasonable combination.

    Direct from Herms page:
Coming Soon!I will be adding the 30 spline full floating axles to my line in the future so that Jeepers can install air lockers, detroit lockers and other positraction options that require a 30 spline axle for the D-44 taper axle rear ends. These axles will be the same high quality as the 19 spline axles that I presently offer. Prices will also be the same as the 19 spline axles and axle kits.

So $720 to $800 depending on the kit. Not much different than the Warn ones were when available. We had a long discussion about them (when he just had the 19s) and after explaining why I was going to be looking for another set this spring he found the prints for them in the book he had, just had to get the machining setup.

I know I'll be getting 1 or 2 sets in the next year of these - Great way to beef up the rear and get some options for lockers.

My 30 spline Detroit Locker didn't have this button. I measured the stock axles. The new custom axles were the same lenght. When installed, all the shims were removed. I still had 1/4" axle end play.

Tom, I've heard that some USMC M38A1s came equipped with Power Locks, that's actually what i was in the market for when i was offered a good deal on the Detroit.

Very true, they were used but are harder than hen's teeth to find. If anyone finds some I'll happily swap 19 spline side gears for the 10 spline units if in useable shape. I've been looking for about 6 or 7 years for some. Herm is in the same boat last time I talked to him about it (about a year or two ago).

I'd like to add that the 10 spline and 19 spline Detroits were available with the thrust block back in the day, but are no longer available that I've been able to find and have not for quite a long time. That's a great find Howard!

Yeah, that makes sense, regular 30 spline axles wouldn't need the spacer as they are flanged. if you had of known you could probably have got a spacer made up.

    Still got the axles?

I kinda figured the reason the 10 spline locker went away is that a

10 spline axle + locker = broken 10 spline axle

i thought 19 spline units were still available but maybe I'm thinking Power Locks:?

I probably will never install the darn thing as I finally found a power lock for the front axle instead, that will work perfectly well for my purposes.

Well, when you figure that 19 spline tapered axles haven't been used for almost 40 years, I'd say that's a good reason for manufacturers to go away from them.

If you don't use it you could put it up for sale and make some $ towards other upgrades.

You're definitely right about broken 10 spline shafts and the old school Detroits as they weren't as forgiving as the newer models.

I don't get it. Why not just bolt up a 72-75 d44? Already 30 spline and there's plenty of lockers available. Plus you don't have to spend 700+ on an ff kit..I'll probably be ditching my rear 72's rear 44 soonish, pm me if you like.

    That's a centered D44. We would need a offset D44. ;)

The 19 splined Powr-locs are on ebay relatively often. I've picked up three 19 splined units, one was brand new, for about $100.00 ea. I got a 27 splined D30 Powr-loc also for my front diff too. The 19 splined are plenty strong and should work well behind a 289.

I just spoke to West Coast Differential, and they do sell Detroit lockers for the 19 spline D44 rears. After doing a google search, I also found companies selling 'em.

For 10 spline, a lock right is made for that application, but I am sure, as stated above, it would explode relatively soon. I have not had good luck with lunchbox lockers in the rear.

I bought my 19 spline Detroit from West Coast. I have a Warn FF and have had a locker in it for about 10 years and never broken an axle.
