F head flywheel removal tricks

    I got the engine hanging on a hoist for a rebiuld and have the bolts loose with the two stud nuts loose so it won't smash my toes when it does come loose. I read in the manual about two tapered bolts(pins), It won't come off I ve tried a BFH.:beer:
    What is the trick I'm overlooking to get this flywheel off? I need to get it in an engine hoist to be able to tear it the rest of the way down.

    :rofl: Oh yeah, a jeep will drive and work normally with the clutch disc installed wrong, the PO did this and I found the disc springs worn and the flywheel bolts/nut worn down. :(

    I've never had a problem removing a flywheel from a F4, either tapered or straight pin. If the engine is hanging while you try to knock it loose that may be part of your problem, it may need to be fastened to something to prevent loosing to much of the hammer impact to bouncing the engine around instead of it all going to shocking the flywheel. IMO a better idea would be to whack the studs instead of the flywheel itself. Might be a better idea to see if you can manuver a pry bar in there & tap it into the crack between the flywheel & the crank flange.

    Are you saying that you have removed the six nuts in picture number two and the flywheel won't come off?
    They are what is holding the flywheel to the end of the crank shaft.

    Rotate the crank so all the pistons are at the mid-bore level (about half way between TDC andBDC)
    Take your torch and heat the flywheel as evenly as possible, but not the pilot bearing hole.
    Let it cool completely. Try to pull it off. Bap it hard with a deadblow hammer or some such.
    Repeat as necessary. Patience and time are your friends on this one.

    I ended up setting it down on the floor and used a prybar and a pickle fork between the block and flywheel, it took some persuasion but it popped off finally, thanks to all for the responce.

    Say, Shouldn't those be bolts, and not stud and nuts holding the flywheel to the crank flange?

    two are tapered bolts the other four ae bolts/nuts.
