Dana 27 powerlocks can also be found in Scouts, old Volvos and some Jags. Mine came out of Scout. I found it over in the classifieds on the binder bulletin. I thanked him and told him it was going into a jeep only after I received it. R)

Well i am going the d27 route for now. Cheaper! This guy from my club is selling me one for $10 so i figured if it doesnt work out then im only out $10.

Now I have to figure out my gear ratio and see if this one is the same as mine. Learning something new everyday!

Since you have it open, look at the numbers on the ring gear, that will give you your ratio. Good job finding one already, hope it is already the same ratio.

Get a lockright for your axle, it will keep you from having to keep the revs up when climbing hills-tire spin and sudden bite is what trashed your spider gears, a locker allows you to climb more slowly and keeps wheel spin to a minimum, while doubling you avail traction.

Picked up the axle and it happens to be a 4:88 gears. I am not sure what my rear end is (thinking 3:73) however i now know how to check it. I am going to pull the diff cover and get the number off it.

I have access to a D44 with 4:88 gears rear end. Do you think it would be better to go with the 4:88 instead of 3:73 if that is what i currently have?

4.88’s with 33” tires will have your engine spinning 3230 RPM to hold 65 MPH down the highway. You can actually count on it being a bit higher since most tires aren’t actually as tall as the manufacturers claim.

If you are going to offroad it the 4.88's would be better. If it's a street/daily driver only the 3.73's would be OK. Just depends on what you are going to do with it. I would think that 33's with 3.73 gears would be a bit of a dog. A lower ratio (numerically higher) is easier on your driveline off road.

Like stated above, depends on what you are doing. If you need to run a lot of highway speed, the 4.88's are a bit low. Off road and around town, the 4.88's are awesome. I just went from 3.73's to 4.88's a month or so ago, and I run 33's...

    Heh, heh, heh, try 5.38's:)

GREAT off road but a little low for the freeway. Very fun light to light. Used to pull the left front tire off the ground with the stock front end but the front 44 is a tad too heavy to do that now.

It is not a daily driver and if its on the road, its usually around town. Its a wheeler. From the sounds of it, i think im going to see how difficult it is to swap out the gears. The front is 4:88 and the rear axle is a 4:89. I ended up getting them for free too. Can't beat that. They are home and now I just need to find some time to work on them. Never did this before so it will be a learning experience.

Someone spoke of a powerlock from a scout. Is this something you would recommend me trying to find? If i was to put a locker in I was thinking of going with one in the rear end only right now. Let me know your thoughts.

Just found a 1972 International-Truck Scout II. Would this contain a powerloc?
