    Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get the lower Bearing that goes to the streering Column on a 1974 CJ5.

My streering Column has alot of play on the end where the shaft that goes to the streering box goes into the column.

I can find the parts for a 1976 and newer but not 1972-75

    Thanks

Are you talking about where the shaft attaches to the bottom end of the colunm?

Yes it is where the shaft attaches to the bottom end of the colunm. The bearing is in the colunm it self though and not part of the shaft.

You might try 4WD hardware they show the bearing for the 55 to 71 as the following
Steering Column Bearing, CJ, 1941-71 w/ 4 cyl. engines
    Product Number: 801422

Don't know if it is the same for your 74.

I could be wrong about this, I believe you are talking about the bushing in the shaft itself, it is nylon I believe. I see them on ebay a lot, I bought mine from a old hardware store that more or less made it up for me, expensive too! 3 bucks!

I have a 75 cj and I tried to get that bushing from the steelership with no luck, so I just had a local machine shop make me one. It was the nylon type. I don't remember how much but it wasn't expensive. It works great big improvement.

I do not know of a local shop that can make this for me. Would someone be willing to have one made and I will send you the money plus shipping to get it to me?

I can make one out of nylon if I have a piece large enough or I can make one out of Brass or Bronze. Shipping for this to new hampshire would probably be more than $3 though. I made a similar one for one of the board members about 2 months ago and have machined several other parts for guys on the board.

  10. Mike: Have you ever heard of "Nylatron" (sp?). It's a nylon base with MOs2 in it. Some of it has a hardner of some sorts in it. It has been used for gears in earth moving equip. We have used it in our locos for the entire front sliding journel in our lead trucks on our Locos. The material is the bearing itself, and it is tough enough to withstand sliding up and down in the frame supports without galling--with the axel spinning thru it. It doesn't deform like pure nylon will.

    Great stuff. :)

Justin, if I have to I might be able to make one from a material called UHMW, it is a form of Nylon that we used to machine food procesing bearings out of, just remembered where to get some cut offs for maybe a 1-2$, if I have to buy some I will make you 2 of them so you have a spare and we can nogiate the price from the PM I sent, maybe a couple of extra dollars max.

I have the bushing but I have not had a chance to try it yet. I should have a chance this weekend though.
