Toploader: Shifter on the top and when building, the gears are loaded through the top. Right?

I agree but alot of the younger guys don't even know what a t10 or super t10 is.
    Thats why I asked.
I have seen alot of young guys today that refer to jeep transmissions as top loaders.

Lock it and wheel it. If it breaks then upgrade it.

Since you expressed an urge to rock crawl, please consider a stronger roll cage. Or at least tie the existing cage into the frame. I personally have only used mine once but was very glad it was there when it happened.

EDIT: Oh and if you don't have them already, a good skid plate for the tranny/transfercase and if possible the oil pan in the Jeep. Skid plates make up for a lack of clearance on a lot of trails.

Yes it is a T10. Same trans that Herm runs. Close ratio four speed all syncro. I think it is the box nascar guys used to run. Good trans. I'm happy with the set up, especially having first gear syncro. With the T-10, overdrive and the transfer case ratios I have 16 forward gears and 4 reverse! By the way...I'm old (64) just new to Jeeps. Been a desert racer for over 40 years.
I have a 95 Jeep Cherokee XJ that I use as a daily driver, this old CJ is just my fun Jeep and I keep making it better and better. I'm trying to figure out the next step. Choices are probably, lock the front or swap in another front axle and lock that. I do not plan on being a serious rock crawler but as it is right now the front isn't very good. I'm just concerned as to the strength of the 27 locked. I appreciate the feed back and wish there were a few local people to get together with. The locals here all have pretty new rigs and don't understand how fun an older Jeep can be.

There are several members here that qre fairly close to you. I think jpflat2a lives within about 20-30 miles of you or so. He lives in Riverside.

If you want to meet some of them post a meet and greet in Southeren Ca in the off topic section. I'm sure you will get plenty of responses. There are alot of nice guys on here who will help you all they can for usually a beer and some BS time. Next thing you know you will be wheelin with them on the weekend, oh and if you haven't noticed age is not a big deal around here like on alot of boards!!! And 64 isn't old, I think Sandhill has ya beat buy a year or 2.

Yes, I'm right at the top of the pass off the I-15. Actually I did post an inquiry for a M & G and was told they tried and nobody showed up.
I also belong to NAXJA and just posted this:

I'd like to put some faces with names. Being a Realtor I work weekends, usually 1pm to 5pm so that makes it hard for me. Anyway I have a question: Is this a bunch of young guys who just want to get together for a beer or something else? Reason I'm asking is I'm old (64) and don't want to take time off just to go to a bar.
I have a thought though, my office "Oak Hills Properties" is right at the top of the pass on the West side of the 15 right before the "Oak Hill" exit. We have a big parking lot, a huge dirt lot, and a big conference room. We could have a M&G there in the morning for coffee and donuts sometime and then go run Cleghorn or the Rim Trail from Summit Estates down to 138 or both. The office is open 9 to 5, 7 days a week so, we really couldn't use the conference room during those hours but the parking lot areas would be available any time. My thought might be a meet and greet at 8:30AM then a trail run till noon. We could use the conference room after 5pm sometime but right now it is dark and cold!
    Just a thought.

OK, I really got off topic. Back to the issue at hand. What locker is available for the Dana 27 and where can I buy one?
    Thanks

    Gregg,

I am 55 just for reference. I have been jeepin since1971. Thats when I got my first jeep a 68 Cj5. I wheeled that thing from Washington to Colorado and broke ever component it had. If I had not been for breaking components I would never have learned what I know about jeeps. I do not get as radical as I used to when wheelin. no more four foot airborne jumps. but I had driven it over some of the gnarliest terrain that Colorado had to offer. It would have challenged some Rock crawlers.

However it is a bummer getting broke down in the middle of an obstacle. And stronger components keep this from happening quite so often, but it does not prevent it. I love the way my 1981 CJ5 wheels with a Wide model 44 front ARB and a heavy duty Model 20 trussed full floater Detroit locked in the rear. It also has a Ford NP435 4spd. I do not want to go through the breaking parts stage again. But I agree with the others. Fix what brakes and if it is working for you and you do not wheel any harder than that. Then all is ok.

By the way as a transmission mechanic I can tell you A T0P loader is any transmission that the gears load into the transmission from top of the transmission regardless of how it shifts or who made it.

    One match,

    Jim
